swfc-dan
Couldn't go but was very suprised that Luongo didn't just come in as a straight swap for Hutch. Instead Pessy came in too and we only put one up front at home. Got the result and sounded like we played decent, but wasn't it a bit over cautious or did it actually mean we played through midfield much more? I wonder if Monk doesn't really see Luongo as a DM like Hutch. Still never expected 1 up front vs Wigan especially at home so interested to hear peoples thoughts. Philb125
Depends how you look at it, three up top in attack, Reach and Harris were very advanced especially Reach. Played better today in my opinion than vs Boro or Hull when we had two up there.
bigash_swfc
We didn't give Hull City any respect going 4-4-2 and lost. We gave Wigan the respect, 4-5-1 and won. Rock and Roll vs. Total Control. Should have approached Hull differently.
Birley Owl 1867
Well Luongo isn't the same player as Hutchinson, he's more in the mould of Lee.

Don't see point in playing 3 in midfield of we are hitting long the Fletcher.
Holmowl
It’s hardly a scientific sample but we’ve lost 2 out of 3 playing 442. We’ve won 5 and only lost 2 out of 8 playing Fletch on his own. Cant argue it’s not working.

As said by Hutch on commentary today, a younger version of Lee is how he described him.
GMOwl72
Whatever the formation and ins and outs, one thing is a given - we need to score more goals. They were always going to get a chance and Westwood’s save was crucial in the end.

If your playing two wingers like we had and only one up top the wingers and midfield have to get up field and in and around the box consistently over the full 90 minutes for it to really work. Also helps if some of them have an eye for goal. If you don't get that extra support forward and quick enough it dosent work as we've seen in other games already this season. As an example a midfield 3 of hutch, Bannan and Pelupessy would be terrible as all three don't get forward enough, they all tend to be /play/stop too deep leaving a big gap and the lone striker and wingers isolated. alanharper
Thought we actually played better at Hull, very little creativity, no clear chances that I can remember apart from the goal, Bannan hitting the woodwork from distance and the offside goal. A win's a win though, it's a funny old game.
asteener1867
it works, but its mainly down to the work Fletcher does. A bit stop start, but whenever Wednesday stepped the pressure up we looked by far the better side...Reach came in fits and starts, harris a threat all game
Nut
Was more like 5 at the back in the first half, pelupessy was playing centre half.
crookesowl
3 points says it worked BUT it was very negative IMHO and made for a very dull game.
Inspector Lestrade
One up front at home against Wigan is horrific. We were very combersome and made hard work of it. Wigan offered very little and we should be a lot more enterprising. A welcome three points but need to be more attacking at home.
theowlsman
We got three points, so yes, it worked.
alanharper
Let's be honest if it wasn't for a bit of Borner magic which led to the goal and Luongo's finish this place would be in meltdown after a poor game with no creativity which was entirely predictable as soon as the team sheet came out to reveal that we'd dropped a striker to pack the midfield - against Wigan at home. But as every football fan knows a dull 1-0 win is preferable to a 3-3 thriller.
camffiti
If Rhodes or Winnowt were showing any semblance of form, this maybe a debate worth having
Salmonbones
Rhodes and Winnall can't do much when they aren't on the pitch.

Guest Theboylangers
A 1-0 win suggests it did work. However, I think at home we should set our stall out to attack teams and I didn't feel we necessarily did that, especially first half. When we put pressure on them in spells in the second half, we looked better. A second striker might have made it more comfortable for us instead of being in danger of the sucker punch and only a fine Westwood save prevented a draw.
