Popular Post Lord Snooty
WEDNESDAY - V - WIGAN ATH -------------- Saturday 5th October Kick Off - 15:00 Hillsborough Stadium ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So Sammy is out of this one. A shame really as Cooks Wigan are a pretty physical side and we could have done with his combatative nature in the middle of the park. As the manager alluded to in his pre-maych press conference though it's a chance for someone to come and stake a claim, its why we have squads. Who will come in and take his place? There's three fighting it out for that spot in Luongo, Pelupessy and Lee. LUONGO AND PELUPESSY TUSSLING IT OUT FOR A START It might be that he goes with two of them and plays three in the middle perhaps and reverts to the 4-1-4-1 cum 4-3-3 which we saw earlier in his reign. However, much of that hinged on Hutch playing at the base of the midfield. Will Pelupessy or Luongo be given that role? Possibly, but both play it in a slightly different way to Hutch. Pelupessy more a 'win it and give it' and Luongo more wanting to get on from deep. Or would be be Luongo and Lee with Bannan and a more attack minded 4-3-3? Could be , we are at home after all and Monk keeps re-iterating the importance of home wins and getting the crowd going. We need to make it a fortress. Need to get that crowd ferocious - Garry Monk It might be that we match up Wigans 5 man midfield. It's something that shouldn't be overlooked despite a regular clamour to 'forget the opposition and focus and let them worry about us' . We did that at Hull and our midfield , including the so far excellent Harris never really got going. So there has to be some thought given to the opposition. Who knows though? It could end up being 4-4-2 for the third game on the spin. Monk is keeping us all on our toes so far in his early tenure as Wednesday chief. One thing is for sure, if anywhere near fit then Fletcher will play. Whether that be as the lone man or as part of a strike pair. Fletch & Atdhe - The lesser spotted 'Bigman/bigman' partnership For what it's worth I think we might well see the Fletcher/Nuhiu partnership once more, not only because Monk might want to know if the threat they caused Middlesbro' as a pairing at the Riverside was a one off or can be repeated but also because despite being attacking players they also bring a great physicality and aerial presence when we're defending set pieces, and that might prove vital as Wigan are amongst the leagues most dangerous teams from set pieces. Lots to think about, the debates will rage on , it'll certainly make for an interesting afternoons viewing. One thing I'm pretty sure of though is that we'll not be seeing Kieran Lee at right back, Fred! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE TEAM NEWS SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY (4-4-2): ---- Westwood Odubajo Iorfa Borner Palmer Reach Luongo Bannan Harris Nuhiu Fletcher Unavailable: Forestieri (Suspended) ,Hutchinson (Suspended) Doubtful: Lees (Injured) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WIGAN (4-2-3-1): ---- Marshall Byrne Dunkley Mulgrew Robinson Williams Morsy Pilkington Evans Massey Garner Unavailable: Pearce (Injured), Jacobs (Injured) Doubtful: Roberts (Injured) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Match facts Sheffield Wednesday have won five of their last six league meetings with Wigan (W5 D0 L1). Popular Post Rev Owl
Thanks MiLord, food for thought there. Head says it's only Wigan and they have a terrible away record so 2-0. Heart says it's only Wigan and they have a terrible away record so 0-2*. Or vice-versa. Lord Snooty
I'm in positive mood. The manager clearly has a long term vision. In the short term it's about doing the basics well and getting points any which way.

VictoryBell
Wow, Snoots - that's a really thoughtful analysis - you must be drinking a worryingly small quantity of brandy Not that I understand - my most sophisticated version of tactics is "do something that gets one of our players (or theirs) to hoof it into the (their) net." Served me well down the years, that one!

WalthamOwl
Got to get the 3 points today. Anything less would be a very poor return. Is it something like 1 win in 20 odd games away for Wigan. Let’s take advantage of that! Come on Wednesday! Luongo deserves a start and really hope that Fletcher is back.
