Fulham Goal - not a GK error

Recommended Posts

Said it before - great on his day but slows the play up. Needs to concentrate on his own game rather berating everybody else after every attack - gets boring, like a nagging wife.

Seen a few comments on this but no thread.

Natural to want to look to apportion blame - it makes us feel there’s a reason for conceding, but sometimes you have to accept the quality you face.

Heres my view on why it wasn’t a Westwood error...(actually, the error was losing the ball earlier -Harris?- and not getting back in shape quick enough)

I know it looks like Westwood was at fault, but there’s not much he could have done due to the quality of the ball.

There’s a group of players (about 3 I think) who look like they might touch the ball sp he has can’t gamble on them not touching it...that means he reacts late.

He also can’t deflect it because there’s a player right behind him in case he does.

Because pf the late reaction time he can’t catch it so his only option is to parry it as strongly as he can into a gap (so as not to hit against an onrushing player)

If you just look at Westwood then you’ll say it’s his fault. If you look at the context of the situation you’ll realise it isn’t...it’s just a really good freaking cross

What a load of nonsense.

Was awful keeping if Dawson had done the exact same thing everyone would be slagging him off but because it is golden boy Westwood....

He aint a patch on what he was 2 or 3 seasons ago.

Should have been dealt with way before it got to Westwood  , he had a split second to make the save as it could have hit anyone with the players so close  that said apart from catching it where else could he have put it as everywhere was covered bar that one spot from what I saw and with the pace of the ball catching it might not have been an option ,Therefore in my eyes it was bad look rather than bad judgement

Didn’t help that odubajo was woeful in his positional sense today. Particularly 1st half. Kept giving their left sided attacker 20/25 yards of space on the cross field ball. They targeted Moses and it paid off for the goal. That said Westwood should have done better

Not completely in disagreement with you but incidentally, mere minutes before the goal, I noticed Westwood was waving and talking to Odubajo as if to motion that he was getting too wide and to tuck in a bit.

Shortly after, he did and that left Bryan with acres of space to cross it in.

Possibly but just a point in general that is true.

Would you of posted this had Dawson of done this? I doubt it.

Yes.

Sloppy goal, lost possession, concentration and shape and our last line, Westwood, flapped.

It happens, he made a mistake and he knew it.

I thought at the time that the goal was down to Harris losing possession too easily and with the team heading forward. A quick cross field pass; where was Odubajo? Out of position due to Harris or because he's poor? And then a superb cross.

The left back is popping in that ball, Moses gone in to ther middle to provide the support as Iorfa had drifted over.

Right forward and right midfield should be looking to stop that. Absolutely no one there before KW's blatant error ...

My view is posted in the OP

You seem to want to turn it into a Westwood v Dawson issue.

The reality is that this thread went exactly how I knew it would...a bunch of people saying blaming the keeper based on how it looks, rather than the full circumstances...

Because I admit...it ‘looks’ like an error...but I don’t believe it actually was.

Basic goalkeeping. Westwood messed up.

Need a close up to see whether he really only had the option to instantly block it.

Suspect catching it was not an option.

Did he have the time to push it wide or was there only the option of an instantaneous block?

A keeper of Westwood's quality should be holding onto that for me. Not the worst of mistakes by any stretch. If it had been Dawson fans would have been slating him, can't be one rule for one and one for another.

He's cost us a goal there but saved us some in other games..he needs to sharpen up along with a couple of outfield players..we could have a decent season if the performance level goes up a bit..

I thought at the time it wasn’t the best goalkeeping we have seen from Westwood but its harsh to “blame” him for the goal entirely!!!  I am sure he was disappointed, keeper tend to be disappointed at every goal they concede so his reaction was probably the usual one.  Could he have caught or smothered the cross, not from what I saw, it was a good cross, he had to wait on his line in case it was touched by anyone and made a late dive to try to divert it.  It was the fact it went straight to their guy that caused the goal.  Could he have cleared it further, possibly, but no way he could have caught it.

If we are playing the blame game for what was a good move from them to get to the point of the cross, then Harris needs to take some blame for losing the ball in their half in the first place.  This led directly to the move they scored from.

Poor keeping to me.. he’s had a sloppy start to the season but all the people writing him off must be forgetting the fact that our goals conceded record changed overnight when he was brought back in last December. He was still performing as the best keeper in the league less than 6 months ago

He needs to sharpen up.. but not convinced putting Dawson in would help. Dawson seems to play well when he’s in for short bursts as an understudy to Westwood. When we made him our No 1 his performances seemed to drop off and we never kept a clean sheet
