Winnall Movement

winnall thrived on hourihane's ability to find him in the box - hopefully bannan can do that role

when you think we have him, fletcher and rhodes all renowned scorers of crosses wtf have we not utilised them properly before now ?

this isn't news to us for years hopefully this is now obvious to our present manager

Just watch his little stride forward into the perfect place as he sees it's going to be Bannan crossing it in.

Magic.

I liked his movement when he first came here. He was always looking to cause confusion amongst defenders, but I don’t think he was given a fair crack of the whip. Hopefully Monk will get the best out him. If he can get Rhodes firing again we could be onto a winner !

Yeah, it was nice movement but to be honest if one of my kids hadn't made a move across the front post for a first time cross, there'd be questions.  It was a good cross into a good area, but my god it was awful defending.  Strikers/attackers drill incessantly on taking up positions for the cross with pace, the stood up ball (like Fletchers goal) and the cut back (Reach chance).  7/10 the ball isn't in the right area or gets cut out.  There should be no excuse for not being there when it does get into the right area.

The pleasing thing about both goals yesterday was 3 in the box, players lurking on the edge of the box and the crosses.  For Fletchers goal, there are 6/7 in that attack, Fletcher, Reach and Murphy in the box, Harris with the cross, Bannan and someone else on the edge of the box and Hutchinson is arriving on the edge of the box as it gets nodded in.  Whether that's Monk's influence already or we just played with more confidence I dunno, but they were two good goals in as much as that is what you practice throughout the week and that is good to see.

It's something Wednesday have been lacking for a long time. It's called ANTICIPATION. It's something we have been sadly missing all over the pitch. Other teams seem to be able to pass into open spaces and find their own player, knowing he will have been thinking ahead, and will have moved into a proper position.

It may sound simple. It is, and it's what sorts the wheat from the chaff. It shows that players do not need the ball to be played directly to them all the time. Sadly, we seem to play a lot of our football at a pedestrian pace, especially from defence to attack, which, for many teams, is so easy to defend against. Soccer should be more like snooker, where the player is not just  thinking about the move he is about to make, but the move AFTER that  Football. at its best is a very mobile game

It's All about creating the right service in the good areas for the forwards you have available, play to their strengths and they will score goals.

Pointless playing tippy tappy short passes into feet for a target man thats good In the air but hasn't got the footwork of say Nando has or joao had.

Monk has realised this straight away.

Get it wide and swing some crosses in for Fletcher, Nuhui or Sam to attack and they will score.

Hopefully as he gets fitter and sharper create knock downs or loose balls in and around the box for Lee.

You hear good managers talking about phases and transition between them.

It's something before his injury Lee was a master at, he's always on the move.

Bazza will play a good pass forward then just stand there, where as Lee would be looking to run on past the player receiving the ball.

I'll give him his dues mcGugan was also very good at doing this, well until he lost interest in being a football player,as it gets you moving in a forward direction anc speeds up play.

Got to agree, Shezza, this is what is called 'FOOTBALL'. Unfortunately, we have several 'self-admirers', who often seem bemused by their own genius., and forget that football is a team sport The comparison between Bazza and Lee is a good example. Another who is master at this, unfortunately, is FF. Watch him when a good attack has broken down (and this is what defences are for) and he can be seen to be strolling back towards the centre line  as though he was out for a stroll on Blackpool front. Many new attacks have come to grief with FF being offside.

Of the two goals on Sunday, Fletcher can be seen in the centre of 2 defenders and actually out-jumping them. Winnall's was, as has been said, an opportunist step between the two defenders to aim for the the forward pass. Both excellent goals. .

John Pearson has been saying in commentary for a couple if seasons at least that our forwards don't attack the ball in the area enough. Too often a cross goes in and we don't try to.get a head or.a foot on it.

Whilst the cross was great, it’s only as good as the person on the other end of it. If Winnal doesn’t lose his marker, doesn’t move into that spot etc, it’s just a good ball into a dangerous area that gets left to go out of play.

thought he drifted off his market into the space well and the finish was sublime. He played great IMO, also put a good cross / cut back in that I think Reach should have done better on, and won ball back few times from their defense. Weird how some on here don’t rate him at all.
