Loan Watch Rides Again!

18th February

Macclesfield  1-1  Plymouth            (att:  1,887)

This one could've been Connor Kirby  v  Danny Mayor - they both played the full 90mins and featured strongly

Also important as Macc's game in hand over their relegation rivals or else a win that would move Plymouth joint top of League 2

So honours shared in the end then, although Macc led for the best part of an hour

Plymouth equalising from an 84th minute penalty - scoring from the rebound after Macc's keeper had saved the original kick

Unlucky - but the point moves them back above Morecambe on GD and 8pts clear of Stevenage

21st February

VfL Osnabruck  0-0  Erzgebirge Aue             (att: 14,014)

Joost van Aken absent (presumed injured) from the matchday squad

No surprise that a game between two sides who have both forgotten how to win should end in stalemate

Although VfL did manage their first clean sheet since December - and finish the game with 11 men on the pitch

Elsewhere, it's the Hamburg derby pt.2 today - 12 noon ko

Matt Penney starts this one - at RB according to FlashScore - which is either a misprint or else Jos up to his old tricks again

Hamburger SV  0-2  St Pauli         (att: 57,000)

Probably worked out just as Matt Penney had dreamt it last night

SV might still be in pole position for automatic promotion but bragging rights belong to St Pauli after completing the league double

Home side started strong but went behind after 20mins to a goal scored on the break

Matt grabbed his first senior goal to make it 2-0 10mins later and St Pauli did more than just hang on for the remaining hour

Seemed like VAR denied them a third goal half way through the 2nd half

... but then levelled things up by disallowing an SV goal inside the last ten minutes

Exciting stuff and a day for Matt to remember

Bound to do his confidence the power of good, so let's hope he builds on it

Perhaps I ought to add that he played the whole game on the LEFT

Wing back for the most part, by the looks, although there was some resolute defending required before the end

22nd February

Crewe  2-0  Macclesfield        (att:  5,413)

From the Hamburg derby to the Cheshire derby ...

Still, it was a big game for Connor Kirby & co, keenly contested and closer than the scoreline suggests

Crewe had their sights on top spot in League 2 and went ahead thanks to an 11th minute penalty and led 2-0 at the break

Connor played the full 90mins but his side couldn't claw their way back into it

Defeat sees Macc slip down to second bottom once again - but then Stevenage lost once again, so at least that 8pt cushion is good for another week

29th February

Macclesfield  0-2  Salford           (att:  2,317)

A repeat of last weekend, by the looks - Macc trailing by two goals at half time and unable to do much about it

Except they were away at the potential league leaders then, this time home to a side stuck in mid-table

Conditions were poor and Salford's first goal was weather-assisted, but that's no excuse

Macc have won just once in the last 12 games, and just twice since the middle of October - relegation form

Connor Kirby played the whole game

1st March

St Pauli  3-1  VfL Osnabruck            (att: 29,546)

Matt Penney  v  Joost van Aken  Pt.2 ... both played the whole game; Matt in a more advanced role left midfield and JvA recalled at left CB

Their first encounter back in September ended 1-1 but a repeat didn't look likely when St Pauli went 3-0 up within 3mins of the restart

VfL pulled a goal back with about fifteen minutes remaining and finished the game strongly, but left themselves with too much to do

The win actually moves St Pauli up to the dizzy heights of 10th in the table, above VfL on goals scored

But both sides are only 5pts ahead of Karlsruher, who occupy the relegation playoff position

Consecutive wins will make St Pauli feel better about their prospects while VfL extend their run to seven games without a win
