Loan Watch Rides Again!

Funnily enough I'm going to Dynamo Dresden vs. Darmstadt on Friday night - can't bloody wait.

I speak German, been to the BRD many, many times, don't even need a map to get around.  Don't know anything about Greuter-Fuerth FC though, other than where it is.

As for Penney, I remember him as a LB, running it out of the Wednesday backfield, into the oppositions' backfield, was always wondering when he'd get his goal, think it was 2016-17, maybe 2017-18, but he looked like the real deal.  He ran it out, faster than a "hoof out", and, suddenly, he disappears, re-appearing in the BRD.  I could see a Wednesday back 4 of Urhoghide, Iorfa, Boerner, and Penney.

Thanks again.

Weirldy it's the first German ground I went to, Fürth is a city that's sort of been swallowed up by Nuremberg as they're so close to each other. As you can imagine, the two clubs don't like each other.

Ground was OK - the terrace behind the goal tends to be rammed full with their hardcore lot so that's where I went, plenty of empty seats to be found down the sides then a pretty full away end the day I was there as they were playing Regensburg.

EDIT: Oh and the game was absolute rubbish. The German lower leagues are great fans-wise but the stuff on the pitch doesn't half make you appreciate the Championship.

Twinned with Chesterfield

I know, they must draw these things out of a hat!

Can't imagine Chesterfield earning the title: "Town of Science"

... or being chosen as 'mission control' for Derbyshire's space programme

Houston, we have a problem ...

Good game?  Looks like it

Dresden  2-3  Darmstadt         (att: 26,243)

Dresden scoring first, trailing 3-1 at ht then pulling a goal back with more than half an hour to go

Result leaves them bottom though, anxious times

8th February

Leyton Orient  1-1  Macclesfield         (att:  5,708)

Perhaps Macc's new coach should take some of the credit for another hard-earned away point

The home side went ahead with 15mins of a tight game remaining

His last throw of the dice was to bring Connor Kirby off 8mins later and replace him with ..... the scorer of their injury time equaliser

Inspired or what?

Also, Stevenage lost again so it was a good point indeed

Previously, on t' continent .....

VfL Osnabruck  0-1  FC Nurnberg         (att: 15,313)

An uneventful first half kinda typified the way VfL's season has headed since late December

Their last remaining hopes of keeping in touch with 3rd place - the one playoff position - probably required them to win this one

Nurnberg might be one of the bigger fish in this league but they're inconsistent and have a habit of underachieving

So it ought to have been winnable, right up until the hour mark when the visitors scored

More disappointment for JvA then and no clean sheet = no Brownie points

10th February

Holstein Kiel  2-1  St Pauli          (att: 14,129)

Matt Penney dropped to the bench for this one - might have been purely tactical

Kiel (p.22) away, they're in better shape than St Pauli so perhaps Jos was playing for a draw?

It looked good when his side drew level shortly after the break, but that was their first shot on target and Kiel regained the lead soon afterwards

Jos made changes, hoping to retrieve the situation, but Matt wasn't one of 'em

The defeat leaves them 1pt and one place above the relegation playoff spot

A poor loan for Matt Penney this, not convinced the lads good enough but I don’t know why we’ve sent him over there

Would’ve been far better served going to somewhere like Macclesfield with Conor Kirby

a 9 month stint in hamburg or Macclesfield  must have been a tough decision for the lad …..why is it a poor loan ?he's been getting plenty of game time and the experience he's gained can only be beneficial to him .

11th February

Morecambe  2-0  Macclesfield           (att:  1,611)

Huge game this - a relegation six-pointer played with gales whipping around Morecambe Bay

And at half time things couldn't be much worse for Connor Kirby & co

2-0 down with news that Stevenage were leading 1-0 away at Bradford

Macc fared better 2nd half, without improving the scoreline, Connor completing the whole 90mins

But now slip to second bottom - a point behind their hosts

Bradford found some form at least (and three goals) to maintain the 7pt cushion that separates Macc from the drop

You don’t think playing in the second tier of German football and infront of 25k odd fans is a better barometer of ability to play for SWFC than a few months clogging away at Macclesfield?

Having said that, if he’s not getting game time for a club flirting with relegation to regional football in Germany...you’d think that was good evidence he’s going to struggle to make it in the Championship

Can't argue with your reasoning - on all points

I'd have said this loan was a GREAT opportunity for Matt, far better than clogging away at Macclesfield

But he's been unlucky - picking up an injury that's kept him out since the beginning of November, just when he was starting to make his mark too!

I'm hoping he gets the chance to rediscover that early form in what's left of their season but St Pauli (and Jos) are in a tight fix right now

... and maybe picking up results is more important than giving some 22yr old loanee game time?

St Pauli  0-0  Dynamo Dresden            (att: 28,980)

Matt Penney an unused sub ... again

Dresden arrived in Hamburg bottom of the league and leave with a point

Jos' side dominated (19 shots to 3 - 9 on target) but couldn't find the net

That's football, in't it

St Pauli should've won tonight v bottom of table Dresden. What's Jos doing ???

Meanwhile, Carlos' last game was away to the Primeira Liga's bottom side

He comes away with a 4-0 win that leaves li'l ol' Rio Ave 5th in the league and just 2pts off Europa League qualification

 didn't mean to confuse you @360wiseowl

Pure coincidence that three of our last four managers should play the bottom club in their respective leagues in the same week

Seems reasonable to compare the results ....

Garry Monk lost 1-0 away in the Championship

Jos drew 0-0 at home in 2.Bundesliga

Carlos won 4-0 away in the Primeira Liga

We're all free to draw our own conclusions ...... or not, depending

15th February

Macclesfield  2-3  Exeter City          (att:  1,389)

Connor's first goal in senior football - doubt he'll be too concerned HOW it ended up in the back of the net

It's a career milestone, so good for him

The timing of it breathed life into a game Macc looked like losing after going two-down inside the first 20mins

Their equaliser around the hour mark gave Connor's goal added value but Exeter would spoil things by grabbing a late winner

One silver lining - Stevenage also lost again, 1-0 at home to Salford, so that 7pt cushion remains intact

15th July 1995

Karlsruher SC  1-1  Wednesday        (att: 13,000)

Referred to this game earlier (p.5)

The Intertoto Cup provided a trophy for the winners as well as entry to the UEFA Cup

But the competition started in the closed season (for us) and we sent a team of kids & guests to the first game - lost 1-0 at FC Basel

and despite sending the A Team to Germany (and winning our 'home' games - at Millmoor) we didn't progress to the next round

As for this game, Slaven Bilic had given KSC an early lead and Mark Bright equalised with about 10mins left

oh, and the ref was that scary-looking Italian bloke - Pierluigi Colina

Any Wednesday fans making the trip would surely have picked a nice day for it - because Karlsruhe is widely known as Germany's 'sunniest' city

Probably has location and climate to thank for that - situated in SW Germany, 2nd largest city in that region by population, behind Stuttgart

- and nothing whatsoever to do with being 'twinned' with Nottingham

No.10   Karlsruher  SC

KSC trace their origins back to 1894 but it was another merger in the 1950s that formed the club we see today

By the time Wednesday rolled up in '95 KSC were established in the Bundesliga but would get relegated a few years later

Aside from winning promotion in 2006 (followed by two more seasons in the top flight) they've remained in the 2nd tier ever since

Currently second bottom in the table, but only 3pts behind St Pauli who sit 14th

16th February

Karlsruher SC  1-1  VfL Osnabruck           (att: 12,069)

Touch of the dejavus here for JvA & co when they were reduced to 10 men for the third time in four games

After 30mins on this occasion, and after another lengthy delay KSC missed the penalty which had apparently earned the red card

That whole situation led to 5mins being added on before the break and that's when the home side scored

Joost was subbed off after 70mins - a bold decision, to swap a CB for a striker when you're a man down

But it paid off when his replacement grabbed a 93rd minute equaliser

The point ended KSC's losing run and moves them above the bottom two on GD whilst leaving VfL in mid-table
