Getting the best out of Rhodes

Recommended Posts

I'm answering the thread title rather than advocating one player or another.

Jordan Rhodes plays best in a front 2 with wingers supplying crosses.

Apparently we can't play that way because that implies 442 or 352.

442 means only having 2 in midfield so we get overwhelmed by teams playing 443!?

352 means playing with wingbacks which we apparently don't own.

It seems odd then that LB says JR is an important part of the team this year.

Does 433 always trump 442 in midfield or do we not have the correct players?

Genuine question please someone enlighten me.

Thanks

We can’t get any control when we play 4-4-2, unless we do as Carlos did, and play with narrow wingers.

Was just saying in another thread, every one says he plays best with a target man, but it’s strange how Rhodes’s best season at this level was 12/13 where he played pretty much as a lone striker with Rochina behind him. Scored 28.

That's not what Guardiola, Klopp and Pochitino think. But what do they know . Real Madrid and Barca have always had good full backs. They've been rubbish though.

Midfield is the conundrum if we play Fletcher and Rhodes up front.

Was an attempt at sarcasm based on OP's suggested team formation. Agree with what you are saying.

I’m desperate for Rhodes to do well here, but I think it’s key that we continue with the current 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 formation that we are using currently. The problem is that I don’t know where Rhodes and FF fit into it

He does his damage in the box. The pace in the side will allow us to play much further forward. We’ve had this problem for years. Even in the days of having strikers like Stevie May. If they ever get beyond the defence they’ve still got 20+ yards before they reach the edge of the area. Little through balls will be more possible and strikers like Rhodes thrive facing the goal and playing on the shoulder. Not back to goal 20 yards from the edge of the area.

The matches he’s played I can hardly ever think of many shots he’s had. Never got it on the box and hardly facing the oppositions goal. Plenty of people say he missed chance after chance. Yet I’d find it hard to count 10 he missed (although he should be making more himself too). Plenty of other strikers get several a game. Despite what a few on here say for years we haven’t created all that many ‘clear cut chances’.

This^^^

He always looked most dangerous when he could isolate and hassle a centre half, and cause mistakes. Hopefully having wingers who are further forward, and playing more directly will give him the space to do this
