Bez
Is it better, in the world of FFP, to stick to free agents rather than spending cash? Over the last few years, most of our best players have been free agents with a bunch of expensive transfers flopping. Is it better to spend money on wages and ignore spending money? Evidence: Reading line up: Westwood (Free) Odubajo (Free) Lees (Free) Borner (Free) Palmer (Youth) Hutchinson (Free) Bannan (Free) Lee (Free) Reach (£3m) Fletcher (Free) Harris (Free) Edited August 4, 2019 by Bez

Lee was a Free after his contract expired at Oldham. Lees was a transfer from L**ds but no transfer fee involved.

NYCOWL
Depends what you need. Sometimes you can’t afford to wait for the “right” free to come along.

Leaping Lannys Perm
I suspect that chances of many quality frees for this season has gone now. That's part of the problem with the soft embargoes. They hold up clubs building their team, at least to a full extent and when they come out the decent frees are gone. Couple of loans maybe.
Bez
2019: 3x free transfers - Harris - Borner - Odubajo 2018: 1x fee paid - Iorfa (£300k) 2017: 3x fees paid - Rhodes (£10m) - Van Aken (£2.5m) - Pelupessy (£500k) 1x Free transfer - Boyd 2016: 4 fees paid - Reach (£3m) - Abdi (£2m) - Fox (£750k) - Winnall (£500k) 6 free agents - Pudil - Thorniley - Kean - Sasso - Jones - Fletcher
room0035
Lots of good free agents around the problem with DC is, he leaves everything until the last minute and we end up paying over the odds for players. we should have had all players in by now instead we go into the last 4 days of window still needing a left back, centre back, centre midfield and right sided midfielder. So we will once again pay over the odds for players we could have got a lot cheaper or even on frees.

Plus the Reach, Abdi and Van Aken fees were all reported to be higher than what you've listed here.

The £4m was made up on Owlstalk, circulated, and has become a myth that everyone thinks is true.

But Reach and Abdi were more like £5m and £4m if reports were true at the time? Also seem to remember Pudil being £2m. Not easy to know exactly how much as there's probably some add ons in there, just as the Rhodes fee is probably less than £10m total given he's not delivered for us Edited August 4, 2019 by LondonOwl313
