Righto that's definitive then, cheers.

beloved_aunt
Stuart Gray did a lot of this. The side he inherited had Palmer in centre mid and Lee at right back and he swapped them round. Hutchinson was also a CB and sometime RB when he came on loan and became a top DM. We've got a lot to thank him for on all of that (oh and he also moved Maguire to right wing, where he was slightly less terrible than up front)
damianb1
From memory Palmer did play against Papin for England but it was against France in Euros in 92. IIRC it was the same match when Basile Boli nutted Stuart Pearce. Again IIRC Palmer played v well at centre half and on one occasion he was playing out from the back and had no options to receive a pass from him, Papin was closing him down and Carlton went to play it, Papin tried to block it and Carlton Cryuff turned away from him. Legend for that alone!

Legend for that alone! In some of the match reports they said it was a battle between Des Walker and Papin but Des Walker was sweeping up and Carlton man marked him...bearing in mind this was 27 years ago

The Night-Owl
During my time Sterland, Warhurst or Lee. For sheer impact and out right audacity, it's gotta be Paul Warhurst for me, during that incredible spell upfront and during the Cup run's he was simply unstoppable. As devastating as that short spell was it was equally as bizarre how his career disappeared after that season. For all the brilliance of the early 90s, Warhurst summed that period up in a way, because it was full of what if's.
