Sam Winnall

Recommended Posts

Don't understand why people compare him to big Dave, the reason Atdhe gets on the bench is because he's an absolute nuisance who can often change the game when brought on, as shown at Preston. Winnall has no technical ability, isn't a particularly great finisher and isn't quick or strong, offers my thing at all beyond being an average poacher.

Funny thing with Winnall is he doesn’t do a lot wrong - but it’s very hard to pinpoint what he actually *does*, aside from the odd goal here and there.

Contrast that with Fletcher (tireless header-winning target man with nobody playing off him, EVER, bafflingly), Hooper (link-up play second to none, reliable finisher on the rare occasions he gets a clear opening), Joao (frustrating as hell but a wizard with the ball at his feet when he can be arsed to stay vertical), Atdhe (massively flawed, but anyone who genuinely thinks opposition defenders are happy to see him come off the bench with 20min to go hasn’t been to enough games last 5yrs)...even Rhodes (being fair, he had a shocker in terms of chances forged/goals scored but he ran himself ragged every game in a system that didn’t suit...well, anyone, really...and always looked a threat when he did get some service) and Matias (basically sort of dreadful, but quick and weirdly effective about one game in four during the rare stretches he wasn’t nursing a ludicrous injury.)

Winnall isn’t inept in any of these areas, making him handy as utility cover...but he doesn’t beat ANY of our current/recent strikers in their respective areas of specialty/expertise.

He’d be a great asset for a team with fewer options, but we’ve splurged so extravagantly (albeit short-sightedly) on strikers in recent years, we’ve basically ended up lumbered with a specialist for every occasion when what we really need is an all-rounder.

Winnall isn’t the best on our books at anything, but is he on average the best all-rounder? I’m not sure we’ve ever really had chance to find out.

(Mind you, also heard he might be a total pillock, which seems entirely plausible.)

Hooper has left yet you use a thread about another player to have a go at him

You say it's short-sighted, but once Chansiri unveils that Elev8 is merely a front for his secret gene-splicing programme, you'll see the fruits of his master plan.

We'll have a striker with the work-rate of Fletcher; the pace and technical ability of João; the link-up play of Hooper; the poaching instincts of Rhodes; the physical stature of Nuhiu...and the teeth of Matias.

I’m intrigued that you class 1 game in 20 as “often”

I can see him back at Derby, if they offer anything from 500k to 1M I think we will sell

Don't think he would be under Lamps..  Was Rowett the manager when he was there ?

I can see him ending up at Birmingham or Stoke maybe

When he first joined he scored goals against Birmingham, Barnsley, Fulham and then got dropped and didn’t feature in the following games.

The following season in one of his sole appearances he scored against qpr and then ended up being touted around for a move. Been injured since then.

He moved off a good spell at Barnsley but hasn’t really been given a run whether he did well or not. Mainly due to how much Rhodes cost.

Its suggested on here he is a difficult character though so perhaps there are other factors.

He scored those 3 goals over 15 games and 3 months - you make it sound as if he had a hot scoring streak and then got dropped!  He scored once in his first 11 appearances for us (8 of which were starts)

I like him but we would have to play a certain way to get the best out of him. As with Rhodes but for me Winnall has looked the miles better option since his arrival.

To be honest I don't think Bruce rates him and he will be gone at the end of the season, and to be honest I think he's be a good buy for someone in this league.

The more strikers we can offload the better as I would really like us to bring one in, but as we have about 8 of them on the books its going to be difficult.

Pretty ridiculous comment to say he isn’t good enough at this level.

Since he started playing in the championship he has scored 21 goals in 63 appearances.  Out of those 63 appearances, 25 were as a sub.

So at worst it’s 1 goal every 3 games, it’s a decent return & shows he is good enough. He’s a goalscorer & showed at Barnsley if he is your focal point upfront he will score. But we don’t play to that system.

In comparison:

Joao has scored 28 goals in 127 appearances (67 were as a sub) so 1 goal every 4.5 games

Fletcher 24 in 99 (30 as sub) so 1 goal every 4.1 games

Forestieri 38 in 111 (25 as sub) so 1 goal every 2.9 games

Nuhiu 34 in 208 (100 as sub) so 1 goal in every 6.1 games

Hooper 30 in 85 (17 as sub) so 1 goal in every 2.8 games

I wish people would stop looking at goals returns for strikers to determine their ability, it’s why you all wanted Rhodes and ultimately ended up disappointed.

Winnall’s goal record is OK but he can’t pass, control nor have the physical attributes to be a long term success at this level

It was hardly a sustained run. He came on as sub vs Huddersfield on his debut and made an impact in that game. The next game he was up front on his own against Brighton away and subbed. Was subbed at home to Bristol City and then scored at home to Birmingham on Rhodes home debut. He has never really had a run and if scoring doesn’t warrant one I’m not sure what does. Most of our strikers have suffered for it.

Drops way to deep for me aswell. In fact all our strikers do pretty much.

Your exact words were "When he first joined he scored goals against Birmingham, Barnsley, Fulham and then got dropped and didn’t feature in the following games.".  Which clearly isn't true as there were more than 3 months between the Birmingham and Fulham games..

As I pointed out, those goals were spread over 3 months and 15 appearances. 2 of those 3 goals came in his last 3 games of the season including the final game when he came in because we played a virtual reserve team (when he was dropped we went on a 6 game winning streak). He scored 1 goal in his first 11 appearances, 8 of which were starts, and had a spell where he started 9 out of our 13 games so you can't say he wasn't given a chance.

I don't know how to make it more obvious than that, really.

I'd say Billy Sharp doesn't have that much ability. But United found a way of playing where he became one of the most dangerous strikers in the league. Sharp takes his chances, I bet Rhodes and Winnall would too with service and a sustained run in the team.

Partly true, and they did the same with big Leon. I say partly true, because Sharp is a little underestimated by most of us. He has always had good movement in and around the box, but he’s now added that ability to run the channels, and even drop deep to link play.
