The Great Mick Lyons

Strange. I thought it was Ian Rush. It happened straight from the kick off so he would have been one of the furthest forward, especially with his pace. A centre back pairing of Lyons and Walker would have been amazing. Loved him when I was a kid and met him at the 150th dinner. Think he lives in New Zealand now.

It’s a great picture. As someone said earlier, never has a player been more aptly named. He’s also wearing probably my favourite ever Wednesday away kit.

There’s also a great picture on here somewhere of Mick leading the players on a pre season run through Longley Park. Someone please post it in this thread.

There you go Roydsy as requested ..

One thing we do have in common ?

The love of our greatest Captain ...

Fort Baxters Finest .......

Amean!  in the original photo of him looking war torn, in that (lovely owls away top) he lookslike Tom Berenger in Platoon. but but I have  to disagree with his musical persuasions...PAUL YOUNG!:biggrin:

That’s the one - thanks.

Mick leading from the front sprinting up the hill with the rest of the squad in his wake. Andy Mac and JP not looking too comfortable but at least they’re  near the front! I really don’t think any team looked forward to playing us in that era. The late Charlton early Wilkinson teams were so fit and hard as nails. I loved it.

Slight Wednesday connection...

During his Q-Tips days he was a regular visitor to Vere Road to "socialise" ..

I'm afraid I cannot give anymore information regarding said visit...

Only that it was before Gino De Campo nicked his guitars ....

I met him in a bar in Benidorm in 84/85,he was surrounded by Geordie fans .spotting my yellow away shorts of that season he shouted me to come across and save him!we had some good banter and a few drinks.he told us that he went to Newcastle to talk to them before driving down to Hillsborough to sign for us (that went down well)happy days! Top man and absolute legend at this club (insert Micky Lyons emoji)

Further to my original post that may be the only favour we’ve had from Everton! Think of Catterick, 1966, Peter Reid(a done deal from what I read - he was supposed to have dodgy knees after all!) until Kendall stepped in. Plus several other disappointments too numerous to mention.

they did us a big favour paying 60 grand for tony kay as it turned out …..

My favourite Wednesday captain ever. Came to us in the twilight of his career and gave 110% every game for the next 3 seasons. He was exactly the right man at the right time.

Legend doesn't even begin to do him justice.

How the feck was Mick not included in the Dream Scene? He was brilliant.

The trouble is if the ref sees so much as a speck of blood on a shirt the player is taken off, for safety !! Seeing players with a bloodied head bandage on was part of the game then and all the better for it.

Could you imagine Mick and Lee Chapman playing today? They'd miss half of every game they played as a precaution for this!

In fairness think Lee was even worse than Mick for sticking his bonce where it was dangerous. Saw him many times in Josephine's and can't remember him ever not having stitches!

In that pen picture article a few posts above I loved reading about his superstition - heading the ceiling in the dressing room - sums up how tough he was!

I will always remember how he used to sprint out of the tunnel at the start of each half, with the rest of the team following him about 2 minutes later. A true leader and legend.

It was Souness

He told Lyons that he was going to have him in the tunnel before the kick off
