punkskaphil Posted May 14, 2019 Share Posted May 14, 2019 I support Wednesday but follow/look out for various other clubs: Hibs, Atalanta, Boca Juniors, Portland Timbers and, more recently, Woking. Don't mind Arsenal (Dad's side of the family are all Gooners, and so are most of my friends) and West Ham (the mrs's family are all Hammers). Mum's side of the family are all Palace fans, and they were my nearest professional club when I was a kid, but I don't particularly like them despite having a season ticket with a load of schoolfriends there for one year in the late '90s. In the various big rivalries I always favour Man City and Liverpool over Man Utd, Everton over Liverpool, Celtic over Rangers, Barca over Real. Loved watching Ardillies, Villa, Waddle and Hoddle among others. Don't really need to comment on Arsenal do I? Don't like Chelsea in any way shape or form, so Arsenal and Tottenham to beat them. Real Madrid over Barca - not sure why, another 60's 70's European thingy maybe? Stranrear - Used to go on Holiday there. A Ferenc Puskas lead Real Madrid were the first. Sister Wright (No relation) allowed me into the Childrens Hospital TV room to witness Reals destruction of Eintracht Frankfurt... I was just 10 years old how could you fail to be inspired by that lot. Not long after that I was so proud to be selected at Crookesmoor Juniors for the house footy tournament and Scored for Hawkins (Yellows) slotting past Rod Smith who was in goal for Grenville (Green). We lost in the final 2-1 against Drake (blues). But I digress. Hartlepools and Morton were next to catch my eye successively finishing bottom of their respective leagues and conceding an enormous amount of goals, I think there were season where both managed to concede 130+. By the time I was 15 I went on a school trip to Italy (Florence) Fiorentina, Only saw them once as they beat Milan at the Horseshoe stadium 4-2 I was Magnetised by their Purple Kit. More latterly I have toured Scotish lower leagues which I love. St Mirren, and Stenhousemuir I quite like, for the experience rather than the teams. I like to see certain clubs do well because their fans are friendly, you can have a laugh with, have impressed me or the club stands for something. Clubs fitting this description are Rangers, WBA, Wycombe, West Ham. On the other hand teams whose fans come across as arrogant and vile are the likes of Pigs, Leeds, Liverpool, Derby, Celtic. Unfortunately mate, and i’m sorry I have to be the one to break this to you, but football clubs are owned by very rich people nowadays who want their club to generate as much money as they possibly can. They mostly do this because they like money, but they also like success so a good number of them invest a lot of that money into their clubs in the hope of achieving that success. Fans, us irrational idiots, also love it when clubs spend that money on players. Look! there’s a “megathread” pinned to the top of this forum dedicated to the subject of getting new shiny players into the club. Maybe one day we’ll spend enough in the gathering of these players to not only make it into the Premier League but also maybe become part of a “Big ...” well, anything really. Leicester, a few years back, were us. They invested & their recruitment & ambition could see them become part of the “Big 7”, or maybe not & they get relegated back down here & the status quo is restored. I just know that the facts are the PL has the fairest wealth distribution of all the European major leagues and because of that investment in competition it is also the richest league in the world. The big clubs will always try to twist things to their advantage but they all realise what the leagues strength is and that’s why despite the doom-mongering of fossils such as yourself proclaiming “claptrap” there has been no breakaway, no carve-up, no closed shop. I wouldn't call that supporting them even though I might cheer at moments. I hoped Liverpool would win the league. I always want the English teams to win in the Champions League.
