Another wonder kid who is that amazing has made no first team appearances for a team fighting relegation in the Scottish top flight after just 6 wins and 25 goals in 34 games.

For me if you had a great young striker he would have been given a chance.

from that you'd imagine he was a long way off first team football down here.

if he wants first team football (and he ought to) then staying there should give him the best opportunity.

Why should he ought to want first team football? He's an 18 year old still learning his way. Few years in u23 does no one no harm with a couple of appearances here and there.

Gotta walk before you can run, so to speak.

at 18 any player should be wanting first team football, anything less and his 'desire' should be brought into question.

rooney would be one of the best players in the england side at that age, gerrard wasn't far off too.

the lad looks slightly built, and thus maybe a 'late developer', but nevertheless should want that first Xl shirt on his back, especially so if they are a shyte first Xl as it seems.

No idea if this true and if true good/bad/neither. But absolute shout out to classic journalese recalling happier times. "The struggling Taysiders" is good but "the rangy marksman" is simply a classic. Pure old school. If the writer doesn't wear a pork pie hat and a creased trench coat, he should damn well start today

Rooney is part of the exception, how many players are ready made for the top league at 18?

18 year olds shouldn't be expecting first team footy, that's just rounduns.

Rooney, Owen, Lampard, Mbappe. After that who?

In my rather extended time watching the Owls, I remember a number of virtually unknown players we've brought down from Scotland, who  have turned out to be S6 Favourites  two names which appear instantly being Craig and McCalliog.

But we bought Jimmy Mac from Chelsea, and Tommy Craig wasn't exactly cheap as we paid what was then a record fee for a teenager. Neither of them unknown.

Whilst I agree with your point, there is also the argument that if you put a kid into a side with zero confidence and heading towards relegation, is that a good idea?

Would it not be better to wait and then use him for next season?

We're a classic example of this. We threw the likes of Haslam, Bromby, Quinn and Beevers into a side consistenly losing and with zero confidence. They were highly rated in the youth academy and even in their first few matches had premiership clubs taking a look (Chelsea with Bromby, Spurs with Quinn and Beevers, Leicester with Haslam) - safe to say their careers completely nose dived with us due to our form. Not forgetting Beevers was part of the "20 million pound" defence we once had

Young players with potential on reasonable wages.

Seems a better way to 'gamble' than spending money on aging players on massive wages.

No bothered where they are from as long as the manager wants them and he can get a tune from them.

And you speak Scottish!

If they’d have been good enough our form at the time would have turned out to be irrelevant, and I’m sure they’d have gone on to play at the highest level... but unfortunately none of them were very good, Quinn’s level was about the championship, same for Bromby and the others not even that.

Clive Allen, Giggs, Scholes, Fowler, McMannaman, our own DEH. There's been plenty who were ready for it before age 20, also plenty more who weren't.

SWFC and Scottish players = disaster.  Can't remember many good players (or successes) over the past 40 years.  Steve Maclean, Andy Blair, are the standout against the Gary Teales, Donnelly, O'Donnell, Stevie May, Maurice Ross, David Graham, Mark Reynolds, Paul Heffernan, etc.
