A history of football's strangest shirt numbers

Ossie Ardiles, legendary attacking midfielder, wore #1 in the Argentina squad that won the World Cup in 1978.

 

The Argentinians listed their team in alphabetical order and allocated numbers 1-22 accordingly. Ardiles was the first name on the list.

 

I can't recall an outfield player wearing #1 since although I wouldn't be surprised if this happened somewhere.
