What has happened to Penney?

Recommended Posts

Fox is a mid level pro, 6 ft and not afraid to mix physically, good in the air, strong in tackle but limited skill wise although can put a good ball in at times.

Penney has a more magic left foot but other than this is entirely the opposite of Fox. Good skill, decent passer but physically weak, can't jump and not so strong in the tackle. However, he's a young lad who will get better at the physical side.

He's never been a right midfielder, which is where Dross played him at the Lane and in other matches.

You could see how lost he was.

Needs to be slowly reintroduced in the LB position and for me Luton is a good opp to do this.

Thay said, I'd put as strong a team as possible out for FA Cup as if draw is favourable I can see us going on a run given Bruce seeming Cup specialism....Luton will be a tough, physical game so given what I've said above probably Pudil at LB!

You have to credit jos in a way for tm giving penney and the other young lads their chance, yet also he failed with his man management and protection of them, so not so good.

The prospective good that may come from this is he's had experience of what it takes to become a good footballer at this level and hopefully he along with the development coaches will now have a far better knowledge of his weaknesses at this level and should hopefully be able to improve on these areas, so that when called upon in the future, hell be better equipped and find an easier transition into playing well and regularly.

Showed early promise and then once weakness in his game were exposed by other teams he struggled to combat them.  Ended up looking way out of his depth unfortuantely.

Had an absolutely shocker at Boro (I think) and should have been pulled out of the side for a few weeks. Preferably back into the 23s or a lower league so as to return to a more comfortable level.

IMO he is best when played without Thorniley behind him. When together he plays very conservatively, and looks for JT far too often when he needs to be braver on the ball.

Has a family member who comes on here and posts as slogboy...frequently criticising other players to compensate for Penney’s poor performances. Not ideal really.

He’s just been unlucky

jos killed this team and everybody looked poor for some to lay Critism of penny based on that period is a little harsh and shortsighted. He was one of the few players that actually came out of the jos reign with any kind of credit for me

Bullen went with Fox He went for more vocal players and experience if he would have gone with Penny some on here  would be thinking he’d be on verge of an 50million move to Barcelona

The teams playing well at the moment and  bullens doing what we all have been crying out for, playing a settled team

the shirt is fox’s to Lose and whilst I suspect penny will start tomorrow he’s going to have to wait his turn for the first team then make it his own

I generally believe he’s a great long term plan for our left back and when I say long time I mean now jos has gone he could go in at anytime

Played very well at left back was then moved into a position where he struggled. Young players do not need moving around or they lose form and it happened to Penney. The playing of Penney out of position what was lost Jos my support along with unnecessary changes. he was right to give young players a chance but they need a run of games not to chop and change every week, it defied logic of giving them a chance.

I have sympathy for the lad as all defence has improved since we have settled team. Hope he gets in team again at Left back with a proper settled side will do well I am certain.

Very much agree. He did really well at left back but began to wander around and then he was moved to play further forward.

It was hard to understand and,  as JL always struck me as sensible, it remains a mystery whether Penney asked to be moved forwards as he started as a a left winger, or was it JL staring to lose balance.
