2018 review

Funny calendar year this one.

Started awful with a 3-0 defeat to Burton. Jos arrived soon after and we managed a 0-0 draw with Sheff Utd with our squad absolutely decimated with injury. Jos didn’t come in and have a bounce of results. We drew a few whilst we recovered players from injury. We got our first win against Derby, Joao with the double and Sean Clare looked a real prospect. When I thought we’d kick on under Jos we went onto lose 4 on the bounce. Including a defeat at Milwall where Jos didn’t play a recognised striker.

Things turned around though we beat Leeds at Elland Road, Nuhiu was a born again beast up top. Followed by a superb display at home to Preston, Forestieri returned. Victory over Sunderland ensured we were safe from the drop. We ended the season strongly, FF and Nuhiu were on fire beating Reading and Norwich at home quite convincingly. Overall a season to forget, sprinkled with some quality moments. I thought we’d kick on the following season.

Pre-season was underway, we needed a couple in but they weren’t coming. Instead we sold our best fullback and our record signing was farmed out on loan to Norwich (would only happen to us). Our prodigal son left us under dodgy circumstances leaving a bitter taste in our mouths. Plus #SeanFlair decided he was a Premier League player (he ended up at Hearts). Fans were left in the dark until it was revealed we were under a transfer embargo at a heated fans forum. The burning question of that night about the SWFC’s ladies side wasn’t answered and is still not resolved (sort it out Wednesday). The season started with a toxic atmosphere, defeats to Wigan and Brentford left us all fearing the worst. However the embargo was lifted and we managed three wins in a row. Youngsters like Penney and Thorniley were showing promise and things started to look up. We managed to get two players in on loan in Hector and Onomah. We beat Villa and Bristol away and sat in 6th place.

Then we returned from the international break, and it all went wrong. A mistake by Tom Lees at home to Boro seemed to be the catalyst of a string of poor results. We were conceding goals left right and centre and looked bereft of confidence. We managed another 0-0 with the Pigs which was admirable considering we were all fearing a drubbing.

We hoped that draw would galvanise the squad, but it didn’t. We lost to Derby, limped to victory over Bolton, lost to Blackburn and drew with Rotherham. Pressure was mounting on Jos and rightly so. We were shocking. We took the lead against Swansea and conceded two straight after, you couldn’t make it up. Jos told Giddings to F off which was probably his highlight as Wednesday manager.

Chansiri held a fans forum declaring sacking managers wasn’t the answer and that the club was for sale. Then less than 48 hours Jos was sacked with Bruce seemingly coming in. Bonkers. Bullen took control as caretaker, reinstated Hutch and Westwood who were bizarrely frozen out by Jos. We go onto pick up 7 points from a possible 9, with two clean sheets. Things start to feel a bit more positive again ahead of 2019. Oh yeah and Forestieiri was on the run from the police.

lol

A pretty strange year. Hopefully 2019 will be a bit better. We’ve had our moments this year, but it’s been desperately shocking at times too. Here’s to better times.

My 2018 review...w^nk! Total disappoint given the squad and potential we have. Shambles from top to bottom so here's hoping for a solid 2019. We've ended the year well so let's hope we keep the momentum going and the new manager adds to it.

2018 - our annus horilbilis

Highlights: beating Norwich 5-1, Bannan and Joao signing new contracts, Villa and Middlesbrough away, getting rid of Jos, return of Hutch and Westy, blooding some of academy prospects

Lows: injuries, Jos's football, transfer embargo, Mansfield 'friendly', freezing out of best players, major apathy + too many other cockups that I've blocked from my memory.

Here's to a more successful 2019.
