Should we agree to sign up with Sky's new deal?

Recommended Posts

The P&S system stinks and encourages neither profit nor sustainablity (just as the previous iteration didn’t create fairness) and if the threat of or the actual creation of a PL2 did away with it then I’m all for it.

However if any of those leagues were a closed shop then I’d be dead against it.

Get real! FFP is here to stay! It is NOT a Premiership idea. It is the dream child of a certain Michel  Platini, and his cronies on EUFA,and is with us to stay, like it or not. The game, once  so parochially English, has gone world-wide, has become a cash-cow for many of the Rich clubs in England and overseas, and is no longer the 'Working-man's' Game it used to be. Long gone are the days when some local businessman with an excess  of money, would become Chairman (and usually Owner) of his local club, and its support dependent on local support.  These days are in the dim and distant past. Ownership has now gone global.

I cannot understand, however, our anger at the SKY offer, but yet turned our anger the other way when our manager refused to accept the offer from BBC.

Apparently, the league agreed to this despite 21 of the 24 Championship sides asking for more time to consider.

Sky have had the EFL over a barrel for years. Thing is, the ratings for the Championship have increased in the last few years whilst the Premier Leagues have deceased.

It's a good product with some big, well supported clubs.

I thought the talk of breakaways was nonsense, but there may well be more to this. Without the bulk of Championship sides the EFL isn't all that attractive a proposition to the casual viewer.

A PL2 that isn't a closed shop at the bottom end could be catastrophic all round.

The Football League would get a really poor deal from Sky, because the "top" teams would be the likes of Wigan, Bolton and Millwall. That's hardly an attractive deal. Because of the lack of money, the gulf in class would soon become massive, as the teams at the bottom end of PL2 would be able to spend as much as they like to try and avoid the drop into an incredibly poor league.

Someone still has to drop though, so the teams that do would be in a right mess unless there was still some kind of parachute payments. That's also risky because the gulf in class would be much bigger than the PL/Championship is now, so the teams coming down would be much more likely to bounce straight back due to their massive financial advantage, and after a couple of years it would create a closed shop with the same handful of teams yo-yoing between the two.

Premier League 2 just got a step closer.

Derby, Villa, Forest, Leeds, Sheff Utd, Stoke, West Brom, Norwich, QPR, Boro, and I'm sure DC will be chasing the cash.  Clubs from PL1 would rather get relegated to PL2.  It'll end up with PL1 15 teams, PL2 15 teams; less games per season and a break at Christmas.

Could work out well for the national team.

We would be foolish not to join that lot.

Mind you, they all have a better stadium than us.

When the fizz were we ever genuinely part of talks for a Euro Super League?

We may have had a great side in the early 90’s, but we’ve never had the elite levels of support of a Man Utd, Arsenal or Liverpool; or even the support of a Chelsea, Man City, Spurs, Everton, Villa, Leeds, or Sunderland.

You’d need to have at least 10 English sides guaranteed to be part of a European Super League for us to even be considered.

In early to mid 1960's, when European football was in it's infancy, Wednesday were one of the top clubs in the UK, regularly playing a team full of International players and competing with Man Utd, Arsenal and Tottenham for the League and Cup's.

Hillsborough was one of the top grounds in the land and there were plans to make it THE BEST ground in the land. Some where between then and now we lost our way, stopped planning for the future and only planned for the next season, hence the mess we are in today.

I have been watching the mighty Owls for most of that time, and I am fed with the Boom & Bust mentality, 50+ years, and in that time there have been more bust's than boom's. Approximately 15 years Boom and 30 years of bust, all due, in my opinion, to the lack of any forethought or planning beyond the 1st team.

Do feel sorry for the EFL to some extent.  Whereas the PL just has to look after the interests of 20 clubs, the EFL have to watch out for clubs as diverse as Aston Villa and Forest Green Rovers.  Not sure their interests can ever coalesce and if the 72 as 1 is a viable prospect for the future.

The decision simply comes down to this:

  • We're one of the teams picked for TV more often out of the 72 because we have a big fanbase and bring an audience.  Currently we make very little extra for being chosen on TV (something like £50k a game?) especially as the crowd is usually also lower when screened. The argument from big clubs in a similar position is that this is unfair as we're bring the TV audience and should get a bigger share of the pot or a bigger fee each time we're on air.
  • However, without all the clubs in the leagues there wouldn't be a product to sell and further dividing the haves and have nots with TV money (on top of parachute payments etc) isn't good for the competition.  Image if we'd been promoted to the PL in the last couple of years and were bobbling around 15/16 now and the "big six" in the PL made the same argument to have a bigger share of the PL TV money at our expense, what would we think then?

Self interest or solidarity?

Well, we went with self interest in 1992.

Got a decent 8 years from it. Then 18+ years of being in the poo.

I move a lot of concrete on the QVC.

What about the football though?

Was there genuine sporting competition?

Was it more or less of an even playing field?

Was entertainment atleast a slight consideration?

I remember Liverpool winning the League every season

If we're not part of the conversation about PL and not considered to be part of the biggest 15 clubs in the EFL by our peers then I'm seriously, seriously worried.

A 20 team division would work out very well for us parochially, wouldn't have to carry as big a squad with few midweek games, would get more TV money and have a better chance at promotion.  But is it what we want for the English game as a whole?

What would be best for the English game would be for there to be one governing body for the English leagues as a whole - so ditch the premier league.

Then spread the money evenly throughout.

Wont happen tho

The EFL need a complete clear out of the yes men their for themselves not the clubs they are meant to represent.

When the Premier League say jump they say how high. They bring in Profit and Sustainability but these rules don't apply to the relegated Premier League teams for 3 years, 15 teams of 24 follow the rules, while 9 do what they want.

The Premier League clubs are getting £100m a team per season, the Championship teams will be lucky to get a 25th of that at £4m a season - the 3rd most watch league in Europe football ahead of Spain, Italy, France, Holland but one of the poorest for tv revenue deal. The people in charge of selling this League the EFL.

The new 5 year deal will increase what championship clubs get by about £1m a season, but they will now show every midweek game live via the red button, just a reduction from us of 2,000 fans on midweek attendances will cost the club more than £1m a season in loss revenue thus the extra we get for the new deal will be lost in gate receipts, add to that fans will quite rightly start looking at all ticketing. Why would a fan pay £600+ for a season ticket if they can watch 10 games in the comfort of their own home or the local pub.

The Championship clubs need to stop bending over and taking it from Sky and The Premier league and either get a fairer share on what is offer or find an alternative provider. I am sure BT, Virgin, Amazon and a few others will be more than willing to step in if Sky do not at the very least double the current offer on the table.

For me every one of the Championship teams need to issue a vote of no confidence in the EFL. Either P&S  rules apply to all the 24 teams or they scrap the rules until they do.

Could be worse could have signed a full back on £25k a week to only play 34 minutes in a whole season......

Oh wait a minute DC did with Urby Emanuelson

There seem to bea bit of a theme developing on who at the club does not have a clue what he is doing.
