If you actually believe that when young lads are having seasons like that we should be putting them on good long term contracts at that time, you've lost the plot.

What I believe is every player that gets promoted from the development squad had been promoted because those in charge have deemed them worth while or good enough to be in that team or first team squad. Most fans have seen and also the manager that he is better than the established Left back we have on a lot more money. If it was me i would be tying him down to a long term contract now, because we are on sky again tonight and he has another good game the premiership scouts will be calling.

 

If we value these players enough to develop and give them first team opportunity then why don't we value them enough to give then anymore than 1 year deals. Why should we be shocked when they then leave to another team offer a longer contract or more money.

I would say it's more that he progressed and improved. It's what all young players hope to do and he succeeded.

Carlos would never have played him here. And, I don't even think Evans played him that much either? In fact, I even recall Penney saying recently that his time at Mansfield was frustrating.

Evans left four weeks after Penney signed for Mansfield... although that said in those 4 or so weeks Penney only made two substitute appearances for Mansfield

Agree with your first sentence. Not your second.

 

Casual, almost complacent. Gave the ball away too easily and too often.

I agree he has massive potential. and that he also needs to keep grounded. He is learning. He will make mistakes (like the shocking pass that gifted them possession and had half the team out of position at the start of their second goal. If you do that for the U23's there is zero likelihood of getting punished. 

 

Having said that it is criminal that three of our experienced "professionals" did not act contrary to the spirit of the game and bring down Barnes 50 yards from goal. Every other team would have done it.

I thought he was poor tonight, at times. He needs to play further up the pitch.

 

We play a defensive 532. A better side with 3 better centre half’s would allow him to push on more. He’s wasted at left back. Wand of a left foot.

He’s got potential and I hope he realises that with us but he was directly responsible for   their equaliser and was generally poor tonight.

With the return of Bannan for the Bristol trip it’s maybe his place that’s forfeit!

Maybe part of the problem is that after a few decent performances most people have decided he has "massive" potential.  He looks a footballer for sure and is comfortable on the ball - certainly worth offering a decent contract - but I worry he may be neither a full back or a wing back and tonight showed he still has a way to go.

Awful pass led to there second goal . Yes there player should've been brought down but at this level giving the ball away so easily can see you get punished. Penney has been outstanding since he came into the team though

I like Penney but he tends to overplay at times. Lost ball via a poor cross when on edge of WBA penalty area thus taking out at least three of our players who were in it and which ultimately led to them scoring. He also failed to deliver a cross by trying to beat his man several times in similar position later on when he could have crossed into a dangerous area instead. I hope he learns from these mistakes and that simple is sometimes best.
