Matt Penney Contract

Didn’t Jos say last week that the 2 weeks off coming soon will be the time to talk?

Diabolical if that's what he's said publicly. Alerting every man and his dog that we aren't in talks with him yet.

It gives time for clubs to come and test the water with him. The likes of Villa and Swansea could easily offer him 5k a week and we will lose him.

We cant wait and be slack on this one.

We need to hide his passport and start a brainwashing course right now about how terrible Belgium is.

That's the other thing, he's good mates with George Hirst, who will no doubt be in his ear telling him about potential wages away from Wednesday.

No idea what he's on now, but if we could secure him long term for only 5k a week that's a no brainer - I bet Morgan Fox is on more than that.

Nobody can offer him anything yet, so long as we get it sorted before January then no club can talk to him or his representatives, they’d have to go through the club

Surely there is a database of all players and most clubs will be well aware who is available and if they can approach his representatives.

Do you really think everyone does that? Nothing stopping someone whispering something into his ear.

From his interview today it sounds like we haven't offered one and he isn't thinking about it either.

Are we about to lose another one for a pittance?

If we have been talking to him about it I would think it's unlikely he would discuss it in a newspaper interview.

Doesn't help him or the club to publicise it.

That lad is pure class. Needs thing to a five year contract.

He's coming through at a really awkward time. I bet there's a few people at the club sat scratching their heads wondering how to tackle this offer.

He looks like the real deal, so do we offer him a deal in line with the senior pros in his position?

Or, do we make him the best paid player in his age group, but still well short of the other first team players?

He is young and hasn't played many games. He looks very good, but it's not uncommon for young players to break through, look like world beaters then drop off and end up back in the U23s. With that in mind, a deal in line with the first team seems unlikely.

But, if we offer him a 4 year deal on relatively low wages because of his age and inexperience, unless we're going to renegotiate it twice a season for the rest of the deal, there's a good chance he'll have his head turned by vastly improved offers elsewhere if he continues to develop at the same rate.

We have to get this exactly right, else it could scupper negotiations with all youngsters breaking through for the next few years. Give him a senior wage after six games and everyone coming through will want one. Give him a low wage when he's first choice in his position and the young lads will always be looking elsewhere for a better deal, knowing that younger players at Wednesday don't get paid well, even if you're a first team regular.

It could also be the case that Matt and his agent want to hold off until the end of the season, as it puts them in a much stronger position for negotiating a good contract if he's been first choice all year.

I don't envy whoever has to try and work this one out.

It really is a tough one. Offer him a low contract and he leaves with them fans slating the club for not getting him tied down. Offer him big money and we break a wage structure unsettling others when under FFP we are hamstrung in making wholesale increases.

Offer somewhere in the middle and it’s a gamble if he signs or not whilst probably upsetting everyone.

Thorniley signed in February, so Penney's deal should perhaps be relative to that?

But Thorniley wasn't first choice in February. He took his chance very well and earned his place as first choice centre back, but in February would he realistically have been agreeing a deal as a young lad who is probably 4th/5th choice at that point?

So should Penney be offered more than Thorniley now because he's negotiation from the position of first choice rather than backup? And how long before Jordan is asking where his pay rise is if so?

This could get really messy, especially with more and more youngsters breaking into the first team.

This is complete rubbish

You sign up your assets in 18 months time a championship quality left back/left winger with room to improve will fetch millions. The manager has a recruitment policy apparently to sign player between 19-23 but the club currently don't value these players and offer them year to year deal expecting the players to play lots of first team football before giving longer deals.

The club need to scrap their policy of not valuing youth and allowing players to get to the last 6 months of contracts before signing them up.

This policy last season cost the club about £3-4m with the money we would have got for Hirst and Clare had they been in contract compared to the £300,000 we actually got. We offer 5 figures salaries to players over the hill like Pudil, Loovens, Jones and then play hard ball when kids ask for a few thousand a week.

Take the money we are wasting on Abdi, we could sign up Penney, Thorniley, Baker, Neilson and still not be spending as much as we are on Adbi to sit in the stands.
