Owl 44
Had a good night last night at the club's evening with Ron Atkinson event. He told some amusing tales of Nigel Pearson slamming him against the gym wall in a 5-a-side game, David Hirst drinking all the players' champagne up at breakfast on the morning of the Manchester City match when he ended up in goal, how he very nearly signed Gordon Strachan for Wednesday and how Neil Warnock regularly used to stand on the touchline telling his players to break the opposition's legs. His all-time favourite Wednesday XI from his time is as follows : Chris Turner Roland Nilsson Nigel Pearson Des Walker Nigel Worthington Chris Waddle John Sheridan Carlton Palmer David Hirst Paulo di Canio Benito Carbone Nicolas Alexanderson (think he miscounted) A good night was had by all and it was pleasing to see our CEO in attendance. 3

I have no idea if any lines were stepped over Corky. I fear that your thread may have been obliterated by Neils Star-newsfeed-spybot , even if it is now disguised as Richard Madeley... Wish I'd not had another engagment last night as I would have loved to have popped down and seen the Bigman.

Wish I'd not had another engagment last night as I would have loved to have popped down and seen the Bigman. Would also have been good to meet you Snoots and put a face to a name. Big Ron was class both during and after the event and we had a decent chat to be fair. I also confessed to him that it was my question from table 9 which asked why he used to wear his sunglasses at night games His retort was ace. Btw, can you get me Katrien's contact number or e-mail? OWL1969
Didn't go last night, but saw big Ron at the League Cup anniversary. Top man. In terms of managers I've seen Big Jack was great, Wilko was/is Mr Wednesday but Big Ron was by far the best, great manager, played great attacking football, attracted big name players, massive personality, flamboyance, actually won us a major trophy (would have been many more given time imo). Legend, Love the man.
Mr Farrell
BFR produced the greatest football I've seen from any team, not just us. A true Legend.

He actually said that he couldn't think of any players who wouldn't come to us back in the day but did then go on to say we nearly signed Gordon Strachan. Ron spoke to Strachan as he was leaving Man Utd and he agreed to join us. Ron then sold Mark Procter back to Middlesbrough to fund the deal (good old Wednesday board not learning from Wilko leaving us) Anyway hopefully another member can fill in what Ron actually said but I'm sure he said that GS pulled into a services and got talking to a Leeds representative and they marched on together.

At the time yes, that was because most if not everybody wanted him to stay. I think that shows how good a manager he was, more than anything else. NorfolkNChance
I’m convinced that if Atkinson, in his second spell, hadn’t been sacked out of what was pure spite from our then chairman, we would still be a premier league team now. He he knew how to manage the likes of Carbone and Di Canio and the results could have been spectacular!
