Youngsters and Checkatrade

Recommended Posts

Or youth development is doing great with the u23s getting to play off finals in the last two years and plenty of lads breaking into the first team.

So should we be looking to get a team into the Checkatrade Trophy next year to aid the youngsters development further? Anyone know the rules on this?

Our academy doesn't have high enough rating. We'd have to be playing in the top league with Man utd, City, Chelsea etc

Should never have done away with the Pontins league . That was perfect for young players to play alongside and  against seasoned pro`s coming back from injury ,or currently not playing in the first team.

Totally agree.

the u23 thing is daft I can’t believe it’s still being pursued.

We could be playing a 2nd 11 with a mixture of established players - jones / fletcher / abdi (?) / van aken / fessi and lads like Preston /hunt/Kirby/wildsmith/ borukov etc.

against similar opposition as well.

Under 23 thing isnt that bad considering we've got players playing for our first team that have made the step up really well. Can't be doing us too badly.

Yeah but imagine where the likes of Penney, Preston, baker etc would be if for the last 1 or 2 seasons they’d been playing against established professionals who weren’t getting first team football.

instead of playing against other young lads on empty training grounds.

They might have been scouted and tempted away from us by the big clubs . They would have had more exposure and could have moved on.

No - that would happen anyway if they were good enough.

saying that players doing well and other clubs wanting them is a bad thing is daft.

Agree, we have done well with the players that have come through, but you cant beat competitive games against seasoned pro`s to gain experience , something they dont get against other kids in academy games.

Even if we were a category 1 academy I wouldn't want us to take part in it. Still don't agree with the farce that is the Checkatrade Trophy. Completely devalues the trophy and the idea of a League 1/2 club getting to Wembley and winning something.

Wouldn’t you love a trip to Wembley to cheer on a team featuring Nielsen, O’Grady, Borukov et al?
