Away Days 1993 - 2002

Recommended Posts

Remember Stockport about 2001. We were soaked on the open terrace behind the goal. Lost 2-1. Bob the builder scored. We'd been drinking all morning and early afternoon in Manchester and gave serious thought to staying there, but then decided to go to the match at about 2pm after a skirmish with some Spurs fans who were in Manchester I believe for an FA Cup semi final. We had two sides of the ground. Back into Manchester and the last train back to Sheffield after more (heavy) drinking.  The support then was the same quantity and quality as it is now.

Remember being in the Leaking Boot Public House in Grimsby with a hideous number of Wednesday fans in 2000-01 season. It was just raucous and riotous (in a pleasant way) and me and the mates still reminisce about that day all these years later. We met a lad who had travelled to Cleathorpes on the train straight from a night shift on Saturday morning.  He was plastered in the pub, watched a 1-0 win, and went back onto another night shift Saturday night. That's dedication.

Hear a lot of stories about the days out in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Also many a good stories after 2003 - our travels in the doldrums of Division 2 / League 1 (both times) and I'd say our current away support is as good now as its ever been.

But 93-02 seems to be gap and you don't really hear much about this period. Did our away support dwindle? Maybe a hangover from the relative 'glory' period of the early nineties. This period covered our only spell in the Premiership so maybe the rise of TV matches / commercialisation somewhat temporarily affected this. Maybe I'm wrong but would be interested to hear.

There were some very interesting days out in that era mentioned

Coventry away where we lost 4-1 and all but sealed the end of the premiership for us. Once they made it 2-0, a chorus of boos came out for 9 of the players on the pitch. The only 2 that didn't receive any boos were Haslam and Quinn. You can even hear the booing in the build up to De Bildes goal which got picked up by the match of the day commentator.

Walsall away where we won 3-0 and gave David Holdsworth a lot of grief (ended up getting sent off). I think that game was his debut along with 2 other players they signed from Birmingham. Interesting activities took place after the game including witnessing Wolverhampton and Chelsea fans have a pre-arranged meet in one of the town centre pubs.

Then a final one I remember in the 2000/01 season was the away trip to Stockport. Alan Kelly was in goal for them and put in a man of the match performance for them winning 2-1. The banter with him was excellent and he certainly gave it back to us at the end of the game. Only negative was that I got absolutely drenched and had to spend an hour back in a Manchester hotel getting dry before heading off for a night out.

I went to Everton boxing day 1994 and drank a bottle of Bacardi on the way there and a couple of pints in the ground and spent most of first half stood on my seat singing and occasionally spitting cookies out of my mouth all over my mates mum who was a few rows in front (unintentionally and I didn't know she was there) I was 14 at the time and all I remember of the day are Des Walkers teeth as the team coach passed ours....Also went down Selhurst park for a night match in 93 and came back unscathed all the way to Abbeydale Road where I was "taxed" by some lads....I was 13 then and I mentioned to my mum not long back that she let me go to London on my own for a night match and she flat refused to believe me!

Forgive my ignorance but what does this mean?

Bottle of Bacardi though. Hope you had some Coke with it (The soft drink).

Its when some bigger boys come and take your money off you, no mobile phones back then, all way to London and back and got robbed 20 minutes walk away from my house! It was a half bottle and we realised we'd get collared drinking cus of age so we went to McDonalds and bought a coke and extra can of coke to drink it with, my mate had a half bottle of Whiskey

Fair play on putting a bottle of Bacardi away at the age of 14. I'd have needed my stomach pumped if I'd done that at that age. Frankly I'd feel a bit queasy now and I'm 36.

Plenty of good awaydays in this time spell, just as someone else said not the stories of taking ends or chasing/ being chased around towns that people had in the 70s and 80s.

Remember an eventful one for me personally, Liverpool away, (week before xmas not sure of year late 90s I think) involved missing the banana minibus from Stocksbridge, a daft scouser and his Maltese cross,  losing my coat, getting ejected, getting locked up and finally ending up alone in Wigan, after last train and with no cash (and freezing without my coat)

Looking back was a top/ funny day out, wouldn't want to relive it though, thought I was going to die of hypothermia, before finally convincing a taxi driver to bring me home to Sheffield.

He took my watch and glasses off me as deposit, only giving me em back after getting £100 from the bank machine after taking me home to pick up bank card. Eventful awayday that one.

Stockport County away - roughly 01/02 was it? Crikey.

Also Grimsby, bank holiday weekend. Anyone remember these games. Eventful to say the least.

When we lost 3-0 or 3-1? Think Luke Beckett may have scored a couple for them. Remember it kicking off during the goal celebrations with a few from both sets of fans running at each other inbetween the stands. One Stockport fan got dragged out of the home end and given a bit of a kicking after one of the goals.

The Coventry game still sticks in my mind for the reasons stated and also for the fact that I was mullered and fell asleep on the train and woke up in Leicester, which was a huge problem as I lived in Nuneaton at the time:duntmatter:. Our lass loved driving to pick me up on a Saturday night.

That's the one. Hard to think they were in the Championship at one point.

I was in the home end that day. I was pomping my pants. Had to show the steward my SWFC Nokia phone cover, he actually allowed me to hop over and join the Wednesday fans.

I was only young. Prefer prawns and a bovril these days.

Was on a coach run from stones brewery clay wheels lane for league cup semi v Chelsea in 90/91 which hid an ingenious way around the ban.

the lads who then worked at the brewery put shandy bass cans through the Lamont Pils line so a pile of cases of “shandy bass” were loaded aboard and consumed in pure bliss of the ban !!!

potent stuff shandy bass :-)

I bet you're glad you drank those before that match. Worst atmosphere ever known for a semi final. Wasn't it a noon kick off? Totally silent most of the ground for 90 mins, even though we won 2-0. Strange match.

The Stockport one and the Norwich one. I think both were last away games of the season.

Both utter utter carnage. From a drinking point of view. I remember the Norwich game being in the pub, with people trying to take boats off the wall.

I'll be honest I'm pretty sure the Stockport game was the drunkest. I've EVER! been at a game of football.

We all sorted of turned up at 10.30, took over the place. I seem to remember,  alot of fancy dress, somebody dressed as bin Ladin dancing around Infront of police.

God knows what the locals thought.

Always seemed good natured.
