Away Days 1993 - 2002

Recommended Posts

Hear a lot of stories about the days out in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Also many a good stories after 2003 - our travels in the doldrums of Division 2 / League 1 (both times) and I'd say our current away support is as good now as its ever been.

But 93-02 seems to be gap and you don't really hear much about this period. Did our away support dwindle? Maybe a hangover from the relative 'glory' period of the early nineties. This period covered our only spell in the Premiership so maybe the rise of TV matches / commercialisation somewhat temporarily affected this. Maybe I'm wrong but would be interested to hear.

Everything was joyous, light hearted, fun, and entertaining. Great days out from start to finish.

90 - 94 (ish). The rest was just necessity and loyalty. (And some games in the 80s of course - e.g. win at Liverpool away)

Games like Peterborough away in League 1; packed away end, James Quinn goal to win 1-0.  But a drab awful game of football.

Don't recall our away support dwindling.

Probably more a case of averaging 2 - 2.5k in the PL is nothing special really.

However when times are hard with consistently poor performances, our support is right up with the best.

We may like a good moan, but we are a very loyal bunch when things aren't good.

Had some magical away days during the period mentioned. One that immediately sticks out was the 7-2 defeat away to Blackburn. What a bizarre game. Think there were 4 goals inside the first 10 minutes or something bizarre and Carbone scored an absolute worldy and everyone was doing the conga in the aisles and singing all the way through even as we headed back to the coach.

We lost that game inside the first 10 minutes but we got our monies worth that day. (In more ways than one!)

Football Away days began to become a lot more mundane

After the 1985 ban on alcohol on coaches

Gone were the days of turning up in the Smoke at 10am already six sheets to the wind

It made for long boring journeys or expensive train trips

And you lost the camaraderie of 40/50 mates who would drink, laugh and always have your back in a pinch

So the stories of events also became mundane

I don't remember Carbone playing that day, was hell of day out tho, took a very good following and loads had been on the beer.

Its worse than I thought, I thought we were on about when we beat Burnley on the last day of the season 7 summat, I'm phoning the old  folks home

That was a top day out.

Bizarrely a relegation party but nearly all the 4.5k there that day were up for a good day out.

One of my favourite awaydays despite the circumstances.

Think football away days since the early 1990s have been better Policed and the trouble makers more rooted out.

Which in some ways is a good thing but doesn't make for interesting anecdotes.

The thing that has changed with away days is how they are all ticket. One time you could decide to when catching up with mates on a Friday night in the pub. Many a time even my non Wednesday mates would go to the away game for the drinking and the game and a fun day out. Just become sterile although definitely safer, have Seen more problems with fellow owls these days since they have no one else to have a go at!

Quite heavily enforced back then with £400(a lot of money in 30 years ago) fine for the coach organiser.

Was on a coach run from stones brewery clay wheels lane for league cup semi v Chelsea in 90/91 which hid an ingenious way around the ban.

the lads who then worked at the brewery put shandy bass cans through the Lamont Pils line so a pile of cases of “shandy bass” were loaded aboard and consumed in pure bliss of the ban !!!

potent stuff shandy bass :-)

Good question given that for most of that era we were in the Premier League. Whether actual attendances were lower at away games not actually sure the stats will be available.

I know personally I went to less but that was just circumstance and age. The latter being that the lads I grew up with started getting sensible, married etc.

Perhaps it was just as prices started to increase, travel costs went up, all seater stadiums came in, heavy police presence and a level of gentrification.
