Wingback Options

Recommended Posts

If, as seems likely JL is sticking with 3-5-2, or hopefully 3-4-3, then wingbacks are here to stay.

Highly unlikely we will add to the squad, so will we have to force a square peg in a round hole and what are our options?

RWB

Palmer  -  Would seem to be in pole position but a liability IMHO

Baker  - Not seen enough of the lad, and academy watchers seem to think more suited to a flat back 4

O`Grady  -  On the few occasions i have seen him seems comfortable in possession an option ?

Pelupessy  -  Bit left field , very anonymous when played centrally, but maybe mobile enough to play this role ?

Hutchinson  -  In a back 4 maybe , but surely this role would be too demanding for his fragile fitness.

Lee  -  (If fit) could definitely play there, but would be needed far more urgently in a  central role.

LWB

Reach  -  Would seem to be nailed on but may be needed centrally

Fox  -  Had plenty of chances but never looked good enough, seems more comfortable in a back 3

Pudil  -  As a one off in an emergency perhaps, but doesn`t have the legs to do the job full time

Penney  -  Always been impressed whenever i have seen him, wonderful delivery, and REALLY needs to start the Sunderland game in this position (please not Fox) until we try we will never know.

Boyd  -  Didnt disgrace himself last season in this role, but lacks pace and clearly doesn`t relish the role.

Jones  -  Similar to Pelupessy, poor centrally but an option ?

To  play that system you need quality wing backs. We ain't got any.

Absolutely. We'd be better playing to our strengths with 3 up front than over compensating for a weak  defence.

Put 4 at the back, but with limited expectations of attacking contribution, concentrate on defending. 433 then gives the front 6 opportunity to positively affect the game with width coming from the deeper lying attackers left and right, presumably FF and Joao.

There are too many teams in this league who can hurt you, best to be on the front foot than sit deep from the off and hand the opposition advantage.

So what you are saying is any player who doesn't play wing back is an option

Palmer, Baker (one appearance in his career), OGrady a centre back, Pelupessy a central midfielder, Hutch well he can kick with his right foot why not, Lee - yet he has played there is the past, so has Boyd, Van Aken can kick with his right foot so why not, Joao because right back or right midfield its the same thing.

Palmer is the only option we have with a kid if he get injured.

Left back is Fox, Reach cannot defend but can attack, Pudils legs have gone hence the switch to centre back. It is very telling that is Pudil was a left back he would have been released.

We don't have any options, it better to give a youth team player a chance such as Matt Penney that give players who don't have a chance like Jones, Pelupessy a go at wing back.

Or this is out there why not play a formation that fits the squad of players you have, if you don't have any wing backs don't play a system that needs them.

If the fans can see what is wrong why can't the multiple years coaching manager not see it.

Saw Penney last Friday at Corby and he would definitely be an option at LWB. Baker has got to be tried at RWB, only seen him in

last game of the season, but after an early mistake i thought it was a very solid debut

I would play them both against Sunderland sick or swim time.

The prize money on offer in the league cup is next to nothing and you only make money if you are on tv, which when the premiership teams enter the competition you never will be.

This post gives me the willies.  Who was the last decent left back we had?  Phil King?  Glynn Snodin?
