@owlstalk
Imagine if the league started as usual but ended earlier than usual, the league cup was scrapped totally, and then the FA Cup was ru over a few weeks all at once like the World Cup is after the league has finished No fixtures being moved for the FA Cup anymore (no need for them) and less disruption for the league games A way more exciting FA Cup as a result as it would be all in one go like the World Cup is I reckon it'd revolutionise football and make it infinitely better and more exciting Owlstalk Shop
londonowl
Should play the whole thing over a weekend. Can't call yourself an athlete of you can't play at least 3 matches in a day.
33
All that is needed for the FA Cup to mean something again in today's world is to make it a Champions League place to the winners.

Whitechapel Owl
If we are talking rule changes I'd like to see 5 promotions and relegations in all divisions, right down to and including the Conference. It would help to spread money further down the football pyramid and give smaller clubs a chance of reaching the Premier League.

Lord Snooty
Well I have to say I like the FA Cup just fine where it is. Getting interesting in January and February. Sunny but freezing cold day at some remote ground that reminds you of a different time when things were so much simpler. Agree with 33. Champions League spot would have the big boys take it more seriously from their first game. Mind. Championship league without being champions. Bit rummy. Mind, had bee for sometime hasn't it. The Champions and also rans down to 4th spots doesn't quite have the same ring I suppose. Evening. Whitechapel. Your idea would certainly make things a lot more interesting for a lot more teams. Alright mate, the Premier League clubs wouldn't go for it in a million years sadly. It's certainly time for a 3rd Conference promotion spot though, they're all professional these days, and standard wise very similar. Also a fan of the FA Cup, as fans we want to see as much football as possible so never quite understand from a fans perspective why people call for a competition to be scrapped. MysticOwl
I agree the league cup should be scrapped. But it could still continue just for the Championship. The winners gain promotion to the PL. A bit of a wildcard for some clubs. A bit of hope too. Run it at the end of season. Can't imagine Margate being too happy after getting through their first five matches over the first two/three weeks of the tournament to only be drawn away to a well-rested Newcastle in the third round... and with only a few days to organise (and fund!) travel arrangements. Part of the "magic of the cup" is the fact that even the likes of Havant and Waterlooville can play at Anfield... and you'd want to shaft them and their supporters by giving them no preparation time
torres
Only thing is, people are still bothered about being in the World Cup and the World Cup still has some merit. When midtable league One teams are resting players in the FA Cup you know it's in trouble

The only way to get clubs interested as sad as it seems is to make it financially worth their while. Plus clubs are not the only ones who have lost interest - the crowds don't seem that fussed either.

They would - it would still be within the playing dates that they normally play, the FA Cup would have added interest and incentives and it would be way more interesting for them to play in. After a league campaign players could use the FA Cup to showcase themselves for a move to a bigger club etc Owlstalk Shop

Said this for years and just the final at Wembley would add something special. Top 5 prem teams will pretty much play at Wembley once in a season nowadays, it's not special enough. Would be an interesting experiment to play it like the World Cup though!! Not sure how you'd do that with the 3000 teams that enter!!!
StudentOwl
29 minutes ago, @owlstalk said: Just remind me how far it is between games at the World Cup Are you seriously comparing a non-league team in step 8 of the game to the national team? I'm not sure Margate and Havant and Waterlooville have the resources of the England football team to organise and pay for travel and hotels at short notice... Also the ability of fans of these clubs to book the necessary time off work. We've had about 7 years' notice that England would be in Russia in this month... and yeah sure we don't know England would make the last 16, but if you wanna book cheeky time off to go to the World Cup then you can do so. What happens if a non-league team reaches the third round of the FA Cup... cue the mad rush to try and get the necessary time off and money together to watch your team play. Oh, and even now you haven't been able to answer... how is it fair that non-league minnows battle through the early rounds (say 5 games over a 3 week period) and then have to face a Premier League side that's had the last 2/3 weeks off? That'll go down well...

Crowds in the cup are dwindling because the younger generation have been brought up thinking the cup is a distraction. Myself and most others of the same age (50) love the cup.
