Was Westwood there?

Yes, signing autographs and playing mini football games with the kids.

Not only were a good number of the players there they also looked happy to be there, hopefully a good sign for the season to come.

Most of The Wednesday Cricket Club players Couldn't make OITP on Sunday instead they set about breaking one or two records themselves.

The Wednesday broke a number of individual and club records in registering the first win(ning draw) of the Sunday season at home to Morton Colliery.

Captain Akhi Sanchez-Khan won the throw and with the skies clear and the sun shining overhead elected to bat. Craig “CT” Turner and Ash “Battler” Naseby went to the crease with an optimistic air. Sadly, CT only lasted 6 balls and fell on a single clean bowled by Tom Nicolson. Naseby was joined by “Lethal” Biswick Kapala and the pair set about punishing every loose ball. The score raced past 50 inside 6 overs before Kapala holed out at long on to a decent catch from Lemon who was patently intent upon souring the day.

Enter Waheed “Rocky” Bhatti for his seasonal debut. Rocky had signed off last season with a strong 77 and, despite an early flash through the absent slip region, he proceeded to deliver a bravura performance. Anything and everything on or around his legs was dispatched with grace and confidence along the deck. He quickly passed Naseby in the scoring stakes and had amassed 70 by the time Battler was caught for 64 pulling to midwicket. Captain Khan joined Bhatti but his spell was short lived adding a solid 14. Midweek captain Ben “the Villan” Heap then strode to the crease and hit a series of boundaries (four 4s and seven 6s) getting to 50 in just 15 balls before falling to Lemon on 71. By this point the team had scored 302 which represents a record in the modern era.
A brief cameo from Alexander “Zed” Cowen saw us finish on 305/5 with Waheed scoring his highest ever total of 122no.

Morton responded strongly after tea and young Owais Bhatti was put to the sword conceding 33 runs from his opening 3 overs. At the other end first Cowen and then Kapala were attacked. However, the latter then struck when Morton opener Williams (28) charged and clipped an attempted drive to Waheed Bhatti who took a fine catch at 3rd slip. Turner, who had replaced Owais, the clubhouse end then tempted A. Caunt (34) into a mistimed drive which was caught by Kapala at long off leaving the visitors on 80/2.

The scoring slowed and Lemon joined M. Haw at the crease and the required rate pushed past 10 an over before Haw (12) fell smartly stumped by Heap off the bowling of Turner. D. Caunt entered the fray and the ship was steadied. The pair added 71 before Lemon (59) was caught by Turner from the bowling of Khan. More wickets tumbled as, in a flash of inspiration presumably, Kapala for once elected to bowl at the stumps and Caunt went for 29.

The Khan/Heap combo then saw off Van Rensburg and Talbot but despite an umbrella field we couldn’t see off the Morton tail enders to take the full 20 points.

Honolulu Wednesday – in paradise!
