MaliceInBlunderland
Best World Cup performances by country (Semi Final and beyond) since England won it in '66. W= Winner R= Runner up S= Semi finals W R S Germany. (inc. West) 3. 3. 3. Brazil. 3. 1. 3. Italy. 2. 2. 2. Argentina. 2. 2. 0. France. 1. 1. 2. Spain. 1. 0. 0. Netherlands. 0. 3. 2. Poland. 0. 0. 2. Uruguay. 0. 0. 2. ENGLAND. 0. 0. 1. Add on the European Championship results from the same time period, and although England leapfrog both Poland and Uruguay, they get overtaken by another 6 or 7 european countries, knocking them even further down the table. I would obviously love England to win the World Cup, but I really think the only way the England players are going to experience winning the trophy is by switching the Xbox/PlayStation on in the hotel. They have an attacking line up the envy of the world and a more solid european mentality at the back now with the new coach. England will get out of the group stages and reach the 1/4's and then they will meet one of the big boys and then we will see how our young team can do. Offensively we are looking well but defensively we can easily be got at with an inexperienced back line. Dark horses for me are Uruguay. Like your assessment of England , I agree with you .Quarter finals has to be our target . After that we just don’t have the defensive quality . That's the intention, might miss the start of some earlier kick-offs though I normally lap up the group stages and gradually lose interest in the knock-out rounds That has nothing to do with England's progress or lack of it ...much It's just that the games become tighter, duller and are more likely decided by a fluke, dodgy refereeing or blatant cheating Always get the odd exception though ... Brazil 1-7 Germany for example

Mountain Owl
For once we have a youthfull team and they have very little pressure on them as expectations are low. This combination for me will suprise a lot of teams. I can see at least the semis however the team to beat will be the well oiled disciplined team which is Germany. Not followed the World Cup for a few years (4), so rules may have changed. I meant if the draw means that they can meet in the final, then they will! Just looking at it, I think they might meet in the semi final again if they both win their groups.
