Mark Bright Goals

Recommended Posts

Have to admit was guilty of underestimating or not appreciating him enough at the time due to the strikers we were blessed with in the early 90s but looking back at the the highlights and season review videos, has made me appreciate just how good and consistently effective he really was.

He was very good for us, especially in his first two seasons and during his time at Palace before Francis signed him. Think we almost signed him in the 80s too but he signed for Leicester instead, a couple of years before he joined Palace.

Synonymous with some highly memorable and iconic Cup runs with us and Palace, and was a consistent goalscorer in the top flight. Should be remembered fondly. Nowadays we can only look back at or dream of the calibre players we had in the 90s. The early 90s were a brilliant time to watch Wednesday.

Fans used to focus on the chances he missed rather than the goals that he scored. I think he was the last player to score 20 goals or more in a season for us before MacLean did in 2004/05 and only Mellor has scored 20 goals or more for us since then. Says it all for me what a underrated and undervalued player he was for us.

From 1987 to 1996 he averaged 19.6 goals per season for Palace and Wednesday.

How much someone pay for that nowadays.

Massively underrated (even in this thread), Scored loads of goals at the very top level For us. Of course he missed plenty as did David Hirst.

Team player and definitely knew how to look after himself, legend for the probably the most important goal of all our lives (definitely in the top 2).

Love him

I have nothing but positive thoughts when I think of Mark Bright

Good footballer, great partner for Hirsty, gave us loads of goals, and is a thoroughly top bloke off the pitch too

He had a great understanding with Waddle also.

I liked brighty , no matter how many chances he missed he didn't hide and kept going in and scored his share .

I heard him say “I might miss chances but I’m getting into the good positions to have those chances” in reply to that criticism and he was absolutely correct. The difference between a good forward and a great forward (like Bright) is the ability to make a chance for yourself by either fashioning it yourself or getting into the right position to get on the end of it.

Guilty as charged m’lud - I can’t get past that miss. Weird given that his goal got us there in the first place.

Maybe I am also bitter that his injury time goal for Palace ended our title hopes in 91/2.

Likewise, when we drew with Palace to go down, as pundit he was clearly Palace biased.

He also replaced Paul Williams who was a fan favourite.

Last but but not least, he was the opposite of a graceful player - basically a fairly slow tap in specialist. (some do nowt but look good being ineffective).

Thus despite him being a good player for us I never think of him as a Wednesday legend which is, as I say, my fault not his.

I was in the Palace end,  sitting on my hands, the season that Mark Bright scored in injury time for Palace against us. Paul Williams having put us ahead earlier.

If  I remember correctly, Mark Bright joined SWFC the next season with

Paul Williams moving in the opposite  direction at ( or around ) the same time ?

Bright frustrated a bit in his last couple of seasons with us, although he still scored a few goals. But overall it has to be said he was an excellent player for us. Not as eye catching as some of those around him but he didn't need to be. He knew what his role was and he fulfilled it very well. When David Hirst started to be afflicted by all those injuries, it was Bright that stepped up to score the goals.

And as said previously in this thread, he always comes across as a decent bloke off the pitch too. That Twitter video from a couple of days ago was a nice touch; even wearing a Wednesday shirt.

That is very true and he scored plenty for us including, of course, the winner in the '93 semi. Unfortunately, he had to miss that bloody sitter in the final. If he'd scored I'm sure we'd have won as Arsenal had fallen apart having been in cruise control. I bet Woods wishes he'd scored as well so he wouldn't get vilified quite so much!
