The Great Escape - Salute the Wednesday Boys of '28

Recommended Posts

In the 7 or 8 years that followed, not only did we win the title twice but we finished third four times and also won the Cup. If European football had existed then like it does today we'd have had 7 seasons in the Champions League!

Great names back then. Trotter and Rimmer - no nonsense!

Not forgetting Brown; Blenkinsop; Srange; Leach; Marsden; Hooper & Seed . A Formidable team that just missed the hat trick of Championships and went oh so close to a double !

Great Piece Dunsby !

Unlucky Pompy ! Only one of 7 teams on 39 points to get relegated, The Wednesday also on 39 points but with a positive goals aggregate finished 14th. Big thanks to Jimmy Seed.

And shame on Sunderland for writing him off as a footballer and dumping him after he was  gassed in France during WW1 !

Once read somewhere from his Charlton management days that he thought the gassing may have helped clear his lungs of Anthracite from his mining days. Don't know how true this is ?

90 years ago the Wednesday were celebrating what became known as the "Great Escape".

It it often referred to and was pleased to find this interesting old article on the GE from Charles Buchan's Football Monthly.

No end of season dreaming of Cleethorpes or Skeggie beach for thees lads who keep battling to the not-so-bitter-end.

All the most amazing was that the team then went on to be Champions of England for the next two seasons - eat your heart out Leicester City ;-)

Enjoy

Nice to see Boro at the bottom score 81 goals, almost the waiting of a Dave Allen team preferring to lose 4-3 than win 1-0

I might get wooshed here, but only 2 teams were relegated in those days. It was the mid 70's when 3 up and 3 down was introduced to and from Division 1

Didn't we once have an even greater escape by winning our last 7 games of the season to avoid the drop?

Or did I just make that up?

No, this was the season. We were unbeaten in our last 10, winning 7 of them.

Charles Buchan's Football Monthly.....absolutely essential reading back in the 1960's and early 1970's and easily the best football magazine ever. Why on earth did I get rid of them all?

I stumbled across 10 of them from the late 50s in bric a brac shop a couple of months for the princely some of 50p each ….great mag and read them all cover to cover .pure nostalgia .
