The #SWFC Academy is something all Wednesday fans should be proud of

It’s been an incredibly busy few months for the younger age groups in the Owls academy.

While the Under-18s and Under-23s have rightfully earned the plaudits for their performances and results this season, there has been plenty to be proud of down the ranks.

Starting with our Under-12s, the boys recently travelled to Turkey to take part in the Izmir Cup.

The competition took place between the 5-9 April and proved a wonderful experience.

The trip was designed to aid the players’ development by introducing them to different styles of play, make them adapt to foreign football and place the boys out of their comfort zone.

Wednesday performed well against the likes of Porto, Benfica and Manchester City and the players learned plenty from the trip to cap off a positive season for this age group.

Earlier in the year, the Under-13s jetted out to Italy to compete in the Caroli Hotels Tournament.

Between 8-13 February the youngsters went head to head with the likes of AC Milan, Inter Milan, Roma, Lazio, Juventus and Arsenal.

With standards extremely high, the Owls Under-13s pitted their wits against some of the best young talents in Europe and came out with full credit for their efforts and endeavour, representing the club in a professional manner at all times.

And finally our Under-14s and 15s had success in the Elite Neon Cup earlier this month in Greece.

During the Easter holidays, the boys headed out to Athens and were put through their paces with stiff opposition throughout the competition.

The superbly organised tournament saw the Owls compete in a tough group that included AEK Athens, whose first team are currently top of the Greek Super League.

Going into the second day, Wednesday had the opportunity to qualify with their last group game and grabbed the chance with both hands.

The youngsters produced their best performance of the season to inflict a 5-1 defeat on Kallithea FC.

They advanced further still with a win over Panathinaikos before losing out to eventual winners Olympiakos in the quarter finals.

A major highlight of the tournament was Owls youngster Luke Hall deservedly picking up the Golden Boot after netting four times. A fantastic experience for all involved!

The ACHIEVEMENTS of the Academy are to be admired of late. In fact we are currently OVER ACHIEVING on the level of annual investment into the Academy. Well done to all.

However it is an important area going forward and Mr C could easily and wisely invest a lot more into it's infrastructure and purchase of land for further pitches. Any large investment would have no negative impact on FFP.

Great.......BUT don’t let their heads be messed with by agents ...like hirst and clare

And exactly how are we to achieve that ?

This is the very reason why The Football League has regulations in place so clubs are compensated for any young players that are tempted away by larger opportunities/clubs/wages. The longer a player has been at an Academy, the greater the compensation to a max limit per year under contract at the Academy. Whether the original club gets the true market value for their youngster is debatable.

By making the lads fall in love with Wednesday as a club ..so they don’t want to play for anyone else...money’s not everything

Try telling that to young ambitious footballers who are chasing the stars. You will be wasting your time in this materialistic world.

But unless the lads are born and bred Wednesdayites it is sadly true.

Even sadder is the fact that some supposedly born and bred Wednesdayites can still be tempted away by the promise of money, fame, fortune and glamour elsewhere.

A sign of the times I'm afraid.

You might only get one chance in life to earn big money. When its offered, no matter who you support, you'd be a moron to turn it down.

In that case I'm a moron.

Think players can make enough at SWFC to earn a good living.

I'm on minimum wage, these players eg young Hirst can earn more in a month even whilst only in the U23s than I earn all year.

And that's whilst doing a "job" thousands maybe millions would love to be doing.

Yet they chase the ridiculous sums (that even as a lover of football I think are disgusting) even though by staying at Swfc they can make more than enough to live a life of luxury.

Christ give me playing for Swfc every week on x thousand pounds per week, over making even more money at Man U,  Liverpool, Chelsea or some other club I have absolutely no affinity with.

It's just pure greed.
