RevOwl
Surely we need to move nearer to the centre of the city. We are so far out of the way and the journey for both the home and away fans is crap. We need to be somewhere like near the old markets or down the bottom of the parkway.
Sova
I'd no idea we employed the first professional footballer. Wikipedia tells us that the club itself didn't pay him; instead, Lang was employed by a firm owned by one of the directors, but didn't actually do any work, spending most of the day reading the paper! I've lived in 5 separate locations in and around the city. I have never had any problems accessing Hillsborough via public transport. I can honestly say in over 50 years of going, I've never been by car.

sherlyegg
If we had moved in 1934, today the ground would need painting, sag would be mumping and there would be nowhere to park

Birley Owl 1867
Found it in the programme for the derby game this year. Its only league clubs. Says Notts County 1862, Stoke 1864, Forest 1865, Chesterfield 1866 and us 1867, but then claims those dates used by clubs to be wrong. Notts County were 1864 not 1862, but they're still the oldest league club. Stoke weren't formed until 1868, so they are younger than us. Chesterfield also did not form until 6 weeks after we did in 1867. Only teams to get there dates correct are Forest and us, although we for many years believed ourselves to be formed in 1866. So league order is: Notts County Nottingham Forest Sheff Wed Chesterfield Stoke City

Utah Owl
17 hours ago, Will69 said: The record books show our highest attendance at Hillsborough was the 17th of February 1934, when 72, 841 fans packed into the ground to see us take on Manchester City in the FA Cup. What the record books don’t often show is that the same game witnessed an ominous and foreboding death of a fan, George Frederick Hill, on Leppings Lane. In the following months it was proposed that the club should move away from Hillsborough and into the city centre or close to it. Knowing what we know now when reading the report into the proposal it seems bizarre to me that no mention of the crowd size, recent death and problems related to safety firmed even part of the proposal. Should we have moved then? Should we move now? I personally think (as much as I love the ground) it is time. Too much negativity is connected to the ground, far too much tragedy. No amount of golden elephants will change that. Oh dear! You've done it now! Dunsby is out to get you for stealing his thunder! Be afraid, be very afraid! Clearly things move slowly at S6 and no doubt we'll be talking about this in 2034 & 2134! On a serious note, congratulations for an interesting article and beating our resident historian to the punch!
