The Ipswich Free Kick Goal

Recommended Posts

they moved ball forward twice and ref allowed it.

they bounced ball 3 times, we all knew that was obvious was goin to shoot.

2 man wall with smallest player ont pitch on left where ball was going, their player to left of wall obv going to move to allow shot on target.

we set up pathetically and Wildsmith no attempt to go for ball.

It was a well executed free kick granted..  but our wall and its positioning made it enticing for him to have a go..

Now if Joe set up the wall he did it wrong..  if it was set-up to try to force waghorn to cross it, then Joe was well placed to hopefully deal with it.

The fact he was prepared for a cross and not a floating shot, left him looking flat footed.

Either way I hope he learns from it.

And yes my son has goalkeeping coaching and plays in net every sunday..  No i'm not an expert either lol

Absolutely.

Everybody knows where it's going after it's already ended up there. If he goes much further back there is also the possibility of curling it in directly at the near post and he'd get slaughtered for that even more thanks to the old cliche.

And also enable Ipswich to pile strikers in front of him so he can't see a damned thing or get a deflection that he has no hope of reacting to.

Pile strikers in the box cuts down the option of going directly for goal, Also gives us the opportunity to pick up a free kick of our own, but with our luck we would probably give away a penalty.

That's a more constructive, more accurate (and less self-righteous) criticism than most we've seen here.

A player on each post would make it a smaller target and easier to defend.
I wonder why some of the simplest ideas are overlooked.

That means all the Ipswich players have free reign to stand where they want as they can't be offside.

Whilst goalkeepers positioning was poor, the fouled conceded by Fox that lead to it was unnecessary. Ipswich player back to goal and going nowhere. No need to foul, but just hold position and make them play ball away from goal. The defending for the 1st goal was just as bad as we over committed near the corner flag with 2 defenders completely out of position and we were then out numbered in the 6 yard box.

Maybe they should teach fox how to tackle rather than the wwe move he executed. Absolutely stupid to give a free kick away unnecessarily in that position at that stage of the game.

We need to stick with Wildsmith, he's young and will make errors. Harry Maguire made errors at the pigs, John Stones made errors with Barnsley. We can't just call for youngsters to be dropped when mistakes happen. Joe Wildsmith has shown tremendous potential and will learn form Mistakes. Westwood is the best keeper I've seen at Hillsborough, but we need to develop our keeper for possibly the next 15 years and potentially sell Westwood for a decent fee. Westwood also deserves another crack at the premier league and sadly that will not happen here.

westwood is past his sell by date and will never play in the prem...nor would we get any fee for him (he's a crock) !!!

cash in on wildsmith while he's still got a sales value

And all the defenders have to do is step backwards over the line and the forwards become offside.
In most cases the defenders would move forwards and attack the ball.

Talking about being off side.

Why, when we have a throw in in the defensive third of the opposition do we not place a player on the Goal line, expanding the area to attack?.

that's a bookable offence, and free kick retaken, unless they scored of course.

If you watch again the giveaway is the little look that Joe does as the ball hits the net checking his own position.

He`s young and been at the sharp end of a lot of games for almost 3 months now and overall done very well but maybe a little spell on the sidelines might do him good.

I'm sorry but that's stoppable in so many ways

Totally agree. That's got nothing to do with injuries and lack of confidence etc. Shocking wall. Keeper yards off his line. The set up was all wrong. It's also a Mark against Jos, who is apparently renowned for organisation, planning and shape.    A really poor goal to concede.
