Daily Mail - ‘’Sheffield Wednesday and Reading battling out for Mick McCarthy

Recommended Posts

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has been at loggerheads with the club’s fans for quite some time now

The former Wolves boss has a contract at Portman Road that only runs until the end of the season and there is precious little sign that a renewal will be forthcoming.

A large proportion of Tractor Boys fans would be happy if McCarthy parted ways with the club as soon as possible and a shock development has presented the opportunity of that happening.

According to the Daily Mail, two sides hovering on the fringes of the Championship relegation battle – Reading and Sheffield Wednesday – are looking at the former Republic of Ireland boss to be the new man in their hotseat if they part company with Jaap Stam and Jos Luhukay respectively.

In another twist, the struggling pair might also face Premier League competition for McCarthy’s signature as basement club West Brom are reportedly interested as well.

This is a surprise development, there’s no doubt about that.

Appointing McCarthy would be a major change of tact for any of these three clubs – surely an example of clubs making a point of departing hugely from the style of their previous manager.

His pragmatism might actually be better suited to the short-termism of the Premier League relegation battle, as the Championship clubs sniffing around may be best of waiting until the summer.

McCarthy is approaching his 1,000th game as a manager in a career spanning more than 25 years and as well as Reading, Sheffield Wednesday are keeping an eye on developments should they make a change this summer.

West Bromwich Albion might also add McCarthy to list of potential successors to Alan Pardew should the club be relegated, although his previous association with Wolves could be a tough sell with supporters.

McCarthy has though got a solid record for gaining promotion from the second tier, doing so with Wolves and Sunderland.

His current contract runs out at the end of the season though and there is no sign at present he will put pen to paper on fresh terms.

McCarthy is the division's longest-serving manager having taken charge in November 2012 with Ipswich bottom of the table. He led the side away from relegation trouble before steering them to the play-offs against all odds in 2014-15.

Ipswich narrowly missed out the next campaign, finishing seventh, before experiencing last season's relative disappointment of 16th place as McCarthy wrestled with selling his best players.

I'd love him down here! Ideal as well if DC decides against putting anymore money, all in the name of avoiding FFP

He would be a good appointment if Jos weren’t to get the gig next year. Seems a bit odd though if he has been appointed just until the end of the season. Might as well have not bothered with him.

Can't see it, at all.

Totally goes against Chansiri's principles from what he wants in a coach.

Luhukay will be here next season, barring the unthinkable. He done a steady job so far in almost impossible circumstances, and will deserve the opportunity to build his own team here.

And if West Brom get rid of Pardew, I reckon Wilder will be their number one choice.
