The standard of defending

Was the standard of today's defending down to the referee too?

Exactly David.

We were poor at the back, we have lots to work on in that respect and whilst the referee had a stinker we need to grow up and recognise that we need to improve.

But onwards and upwards! The game against Swansea gives us something to work towards!

No, but we were HAVING to defend more than we should have been.

True. We need to work on our containment in midfield too, and having our strikers hold the play up top too.

Good point.

I thought the defending in transitions and general play wasn't too bad today to be honest.

But we really struggled with Vila's deliveries.

Think that was down to two main reasons:

1.) Quality of delivery. Snodgrass in particular put a couple of brilliant balls into the box. Some crosses are extremely difficult to defend.

2.) Wildsmith's reluctance to come and take command aerially. Now, this isn't necessarily knocking Wildsmith per se, because it's an issue that effects the back line also. But, there were balls into the box, which was close to, or curling into towards Wildsmith. If a keeper comes, he's favourite for them. As a result, our back line had to drop to reduce the space, and unfortunately, if you don't win the headers in that region of the pitch, they are more than likely going to score a goal.

Boyd didn't do enough to stop Snodgrass or El-Mohammady either today. Too many times they were allowed to create overloads against Fox, and too often they put balls into the box without much pressure.

Hunt and Venancio dealt with the threat much better down the right hand side.

This ref talk is all nonsense, only ourselves to blame for today - made too many errors

Wednesday have got to cut out these defensive lapses and take their chances in front of goal.  Can’t blame anyone but ourselves for that.

But the officials had a significant influence on that game today to our detriment, which can’t be ignored - so it’s not all nonsense.  The officials had an absolute shocker today.  Every time there was a decision to be made by the ref, it seemed to go in Villa’s favour.

We’ve got enough problems of our own to deal with, without dodgy refs adding to our plight.

I think we are papering over big cracks if we blame the ref at all for today. Most of the fouls he gave against us, were fouls.

We have for a long time been guilty of giving away needless free kicks - mostly due to the lack of ability to tackle

Yes the team is a patchwork at the minute and yes they are clearly giving their all but the basics should still be achievable.

At least a point should have been ours today.

The last time I was back was for the Birmingham game, and the defending was poor then At that game I was talking to some mates who said we were all over the place at Boro as well, and how they didn’t get 5 that day, was unbelievable

Are we really any more secure with the extra centre back? I haven’t seen enough of the system to judge Even the game at the stain, which was heralded as a great rearguard action, for half the game, it was a flat back four

Agree with much of this. We have a tendency to give away too many free kicks but don't agree that most of them were fouls (as he did not apply the same standard to their challenges on us) Some of them would not usually have been given by a "proper" ref. But definitely our defending for the 2nd and 3rd goals in particular was poor.

People are surprised that we are struggling to defend today with 2 left backs and an unknown quantity in the back 3.

On the flip side this squad is on its arse and Villa just could not deal with us in that first half, such a shame we didn't have talented subs to call upon like they did. Imagine if we could bring on the likes of Hooper, Hutch and Forestieri in that second half when the lads looked absolutely dead on their feet.

Although some of our defending was poor to say the ref played no part is ridiculous. Wouldn't anyone be reluctant to make a challenge when he knows full well from early on that the ref is looking to give the opposition everything and will likely book or send you off if given half the chance. I'm not one for papering over poor performances but the ref undoubtedly cost us the game today

The ref had a shocker and that played a part, but...

1. We didn’t take our chances

2. We gifted the the first goal with a mistake

3. We gave free kicks away in dangerous areas

4. We ran out of steam after an hour but didn’t make a change

There’s four major things that happened that didn’t involve the referee making bad decisions
