Zonal Marking

Recommended Posts

My preference is a mix of Man to man and ensuring some sort of nudge or contact is made. This combined with holding the line and playing the forwards offside.

Man to man can be quite confusing in a crowded box and it's difficult for the keeper. The central free kick can be difficult as there is usually one weak link in the wall, Increasingly we see deflected goals because defenders in the wall turn. You could counter this defending with a smaller wall a little deeper and delegate someone to cover the furthest post at the last second. Playing the offside for deeper set pieces allows your keeper some room that gives him the option to come out and collect.

The biggest problem remains that out of 7 or 8 defending you usually find one player at least who is not alert to certain dangers.

Ive always seen zonal marking as basically marking a square of grass . You see players let the opposition players run straight past them if they arnt in their zone.

Id rather every player has their own man to mark .

Used to do my head in...opposition player being marked ... turns and moves six feet behind and instead of following him and dealing with it leaves it to someone else who’s already got someone hanging off their shirt.

Place for it when the ball is on the move but never at set pieces. Get your man and deal with him.

Weakness with zonal is defender has to jump in his area, whereas the attacker can run into the defender's zone with momentum, and smash both ball and defender into the net.

Man for man in my opinion is better, but if defender is obstructed by another attacker 'your man' will probably be free (remember one of the goals at Norwich?)

Can't remember when we last used zonal, except one period in 80s.

was it Ipswich or Norwich away we used it it to laughable affect.

As has been mentioned above, you need quick and strong defenders to master this method not old and slow journey men.

Well we didn’t use it at Norwich.

Loovens was man marking their goal scorer from the corner but lost him

is it Jos' way of saying we not good enough to execute zonal marking?

It takes much discipline and when its a group there's allus a weak link

I'm happy with defending since his arrival - its tuther end that needs attention now!

Roll on next season, in fact roll on summer cos it'll be a busy one for us that's for sure!

Charlie Williamson - remember him?  He once explained the system we were using when he was in the team.

We used to zonal mark BUT had a couple of players man marking their danger men.

At Cambridge Charlie was expected to man mark Ross Jenkins, who some of us will remember.

Charlie approx. 5'9", whereas Ross is the only guy on earth still able to see Simmonsen's penalty.

if you are zonal marking EVERYMAN MUST ATTACK THE BALL AGGRESSIVELY EVERY TIME, other additional options are 1) whilst man to man marking their biggest threats, 2) and/or having smaller more nimble players obstructing the run of their biggest threats. it only need one man to fail in man to man or zonal and they've a free man in your box as we all know.

the defender attacks the area in front of him, it's not a standing start., if you're man to man, you're waiting for him to move first, the reason it is still ether/either is because neither are perfect or foolproof, and when one goes wrong fans are baying for the other.

at present some 'tv expert' has trashed zonal, so zonal is sh*t amongst those that heard him, or picked up something down the line from it.
