Wednesday chants through the years

Recommended Posts

Does anyone one recall a chant that always baffled me back in the day, being a southerner. It started, I think, something like “down hithero” then the rest was lost on me It was like a foreign language to me, being a non Sheffielder, but I’ve never heard it anywhere since

I know it's an old one but still my favourite by a mile:

Hark now hear The Wednesday sing,

United ran away,

And we will fight forevermore,

Because of Boxing Day.

Not many have lasted forty years!

I always used to like the unknown Italian song, always seem to get everyone going probably due to the fact the words were so easy. lol

But Barmy Army was also a favourite.

More modern time the song were on our way back was just the theme for that season. I wonder where we would be now if we had turned up at Wembley and beaten Hull. Maybe in the top flight, maybe were Hull or Sunderland are now - we will never know but I like to think we would have done as well as Sheff Utd have done this season.

Heard at St Andrews earlier this season, sadly not at the very end of the match though

A few teams have sung that at Hillsborough this season

I'am sticking to the Scots original , 136,000 at Hampden Park singing it to George Best during the home internationals.

His name is Alan Woodward

He's a f'kin big disgrace

His shiny big red handbag

And his boot tied up with lace

When he's running down the wing

He gives a little twitch

But when he hits the corner flag

He curses like a *****.                           (deleted - female dog)

My dad told me about a song they sung for Jimmy Trotter in the 20's. That's the 1920's!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Trotter

He scored 109 goals in 154 League matches for Wednesday, including five in one game against Portsmouth in December 1924. During his tenure at The Wednesday he was the leading goalscorer of the Second Division in the season 1925–26 and in the First Division in the season 1926–27. During both seasons he scored 37 goals in the league.

Trot, Trot, Trot, Trot, Trotter.

Score another goal for me.

We haven't had a goal since Easter, and now it's half past three, so

Trot, Trot, Trot, Trot, Trotter, score another goal for me.
