Popular Post dunsbyowl
I hope you'll all indluge me a bit today. It's my Dad's funeral this afternoon and I'd like to pay a little tribute to him as he was responsible for my lifetime love of the Wednesday. Born "on Shiregreen" in 1939 my Dad, Bill Whitaker was a Metallurgist and after in his early working life worked at BISRA and Samuel Odborns and then all over the world before retiring to the Lincolnshire Fens. He ignited my interest in Wednesday history and the proud traditions of this great club with tales of Dooley, Sewell, the 1966 Cup Final and his favourite Johnny Fantham. in 1974 he took me to my 1st Wednesday match on 27th April 1974. I'll never forget walking down Herries Road with him and seeing that wonderful sight. That's why Trev's print is such a lovely reminder today. He bought me my first season tickets as birthday presents. I think the experince of going on the Kop for that Man United game in 1974 led him to see the safety of the West Stand ! I also love, and bought, this Pete McKee print as it reminds me of him and me sat in an empty West stand in 1976/7 and in 1976 he bought me share for Christmas - just remember. football clubs are for life not just ..... I think he thought I would embrace share ownership - I'm sorry Dad, but it did get me a Rumbleows Cup Final ticket in '91. I'll never forget and he loved those trips to Wembley in 1993 and that wonderful day in April. There won't be many at his funeral, we've not got a large family, so if anyone can share at #WAWAW at 2pm today - my belssings on you. #RIPBill 15
