Just read a report by Dom howson saying how Parkinson watched us in the Leeds game and how reach was vulnerable playing at left back and how he could use ameobis direct style to unsettle him.It poses the question how many times has Carlos been or the other backroom staff to teams we are to play to check out weak areas of opposing teams etc or does he just work with videos of previous matches or does he just watch the channel 5 highlights show

If he watched the Channel 5 highlights show he would know how to deal with Fulham

Its just an observation its not Carlos bashing or owt like that its just that most managers such as Alex Ferguson if they had the chance would always be at their next opponents to pick out certain players as a video will not always show all parts of the pitch whereas if you are at a game you can track certain players you are interested in watching how they play and their positional play.It was a quote in a previous topic stating how Carlos was more a coach than a manager

I was more annoyed by the fact that Reach, or whoever was closing him down, was constantly showing him inside on to his left foot. Do they not have videos so they know what a players stronger foot is?

About as basic as you can get.

Showing a player inside is already as basic as you can get defensively.  It's the standard approach to funnel an attacking player into an area where you have more cover defensively, rather than risk being isolated one-on-one down the outside.  For the goal the unfortunate thing was that Jones was the cover...

I'm not sure saying Reach is vulnerable at full back is any great insight on Parkinson's part, and it's not necessarily a Reach thing - we seem to have been vulnerable at full back for most of the past 3 seasons; either through lack of quality in the position or style of play, or a combination of the two.

What? If someone is left footed playing on the right you want them to come inside on their good foot? He'd already cut inside and had one shot before the goal. Don't let him keep doing it until he gets it right.

He had no right foot, show him on his right every time. As basic as it gets.

I wasn't disagreeing with you.  I was just saying that the most basic idea of defending at full back is to show the player inside so you don't get beaten one-on-one.  It doesn't require any thought about who you're facing or what their strongest foot may be.

It points to a lack of...something (skill, intelligence, coaching, confidence, preparation, maybe all of the above).

All teams attack down our left side. Pigs did it, Leeds did it and their chances came from crosses on this side and so did Bolton.

its no coincidence that one of our strongest performances this season came away to Cardiff with Pudil at LB and Reach on the wing.

we looked solid and Reach got an assist.

With Bannan on the left but mainly playing inside Reach is constantly left exposed.

But we’ve not even seen Pudil play since Cardiff.

I watch with horror every week the weakness of our left side. You see the big gap waiting to be exploited. Reach is not a left back as he struggles with the basics of defending and certainly gets no cover from Bannan when Bannan plays wide left. Our head coach doesn't seem to be able to grasp what a good left back is. We've had Helan, Pudil, Bennett, Emanuelson, Reach and Fox with none of them being good enough to be a solid full back.

Pudil is probably the best out of a bad bunch which means Reach could be pushed into midfield where he has had some excellent games this season. But that would mean having to squeeze Bannan, Lee, Hutchinson, Wallace, Jones and when fit Boyd and Matias into the remaining three spots. Carlos's biggest problem is constantly picking Bannan, Lee, Hutchinson and Wallace which is a totally unbalanced midfield.

I raised the same question "do we do our homework" on Sunday. To me we look totally unprepared and do not appear to be aware of any weaknesses with the opponents.  While they have done their planning ala Reach at fullback and are exploiting this, not the first team to do this this season.

a bunch of those weren't even given a chance or still aren't - you can't get up to speed playing the odd game here and there ..

he needs to pick a left back and stick with him (Pudil) and then play Reach in front of him

I would have thought that part of the defensive midfielders role was to offer cover when a full back was exposed or out of position. Semedo used to do this quite well. We don't seem to use this tactic nowadays.

The midfield point is the key one. Whenever Bannan is played on the left the LB (usually Reach if BB's playing left midfield) gets totally exposed due to him drifting all over the midfield looking for the ball. Bazza has been one of our best players this season but he just doesn't seem to have any positional sense.  Reach is quite disappointing as an expensive winger, rarely beating men and putting in quality crosses, but he at least tracks back and helps out the LB.  So for me with the current personnel it'd be Pudil and Reach on the left which would mean dropping one of Bannan, Lee and Hutch/Jones - or ideally CC stopping his obsession with the failing 442 and changing formation to accommodate all 3 in the middle.

Exactly now lo ovens is back it makes sense to revert back to the back 4 that has kept so many clean sheets pudil was looking back to his best and hunt has improved and when loovens plays we look a more solid unit defensively
