The tale of SWFC star Fernando Forestieri..

Recommended Posts

Since signing for Sheffield Wednesday, Fernando Forestieri has dazzled thousands of spectators at Hillsborough with his mesmerising skills. Conversely, he has also alienated thousands too with his dramatics/pantomimes/regular toys-out-the-pray antics.

An immensely talented footballer, Fernando began his youth career with Argentine giants Newell's Old Boys, before swiftly moving on to Boca Juniors. Fun fact: Boca bought Fernando for $50,000 at the age of 13. Some pedigree.

After signing his first professional contract, he followed his heritage and travelled to Italy to sign for top flight side Genoa. However, he struggled to cement a place in their first team and was subsequently loaned out to Siena and Vincenza - both second flight Italian teams.

In 2009 came an unusual twist of affairs. Fernando signed for top flight Serie A side Udinese under unusual new ownership. He was bought by Udinese under "co-ownership" rules, meaning he was a player for both Udinese and Genoa.

In 2011, after several loan spells, Udinese bought him outright for a bit of a bargain fee.

A year later, Fernando's career really began to explode when he signed for Championship side Watford on loan. During that time, he scored 3 goals in 14 appearances, and put in several mesmerising performances.

Thanks to his performances, Watford shelled out to sign him permanently, and his first goals as a full time player for Watford came against - who else - Sheffield Wednesday. He had a terrific spell at Watford, averaging a goal roughly every 4 games.

However, following Watford's promotion to the Premier League, Fernando began to fall down the pecking order at Vicarage Road, and was allowed to leave. Leeds and Reading fought for him, but in the end Sheffield Wednesday got their man for £3m after then Leeds owner Massimo Cellino claimed Fernando didnt have the "mentality" to play for Leeds United.

That next season, Fernando played like a man possessed. He led the Owls to a terrific 6th placed finish, scoring 15 goals in all competitions that season.

Wednesday fans rejoiced, Fernando loved the club and claimed he "wants to retire at Hillsborough".

So what went wrong?

Well it all kicked off at the start of the 2016/17 season. Swansea were reportedly interested in Fernando, and several Championship clubs including Newcastle and Derby turned the forwards heads.

So much so in fact, that Fernando had to be coerced to play for The Owls against Aston Villa in their season opener - where, surprise surprise, he scored the 83rd minute winner.

He then refused to travel to Wednesday's next league game, against Norwich City. Rumours abounded, many suggested he would never play for Wednesday again and the fans turned on him completely.

This drama continued for nearly two weeks, before eventually, Fernando tweeted an apology letter to the fans, proclaiming it was all a misunderstanding and that he loved the club/never intended to leave. Hmm.

Still, life went on, and Fernando kept scoring goals. However, towards the end of the 16/17 season, Fernando suffered a nasty knee injury which prevented him from playing at 100%, and caused him to sit out several games and only come on from the bench.

There was talk then that he should have had an operation. Rumours suggest both the player and the club said no, and so Fernando kept on.. Playing with injections and pain killers.

However, Fernando's knee wasn't recovering. The pain was increasing, and the club finally let him be operated on at the start of the 17/18 season.

The forward is now settled and recovering. His rehab continues to progress, and he is close to beginning running again judging by his Instagram updates.

In theory then, The Owls should get a fully fit again Fernando Forestieri at the business end of the season. A game changer? Time will tell....

One thing we can all conclude with Fernando though is that he is a bag of fun. His career has been as up and down as his Sheffield Wednesday spell, but on his day he is a terrific player and loves the club so much he played through pain to keep on representing the blue and white shirt.

In whatever type of work you do or did would you be happy for another employee to be brought in when you had won employee of the year award,  at a salary considerably more than you?

Wouldn't you have been knocking on your bosses door asking for parity. If you didn't then you wouldn't have been showing much determination. Would you have just gone for another job?

Same question for anybody else who moans about Fernandos actions.

We are lucky to have him and should be glad he has ignored all the flack hurled in his way.

Hopefully Carlos will play him in his most effective position when he is fully fit.

I remember a while ago that I worked in an office for a couple of years and another person was set on doing a similar job on the same level. Found out they were being paid £500 more per year, I arranged to see the manager and was sorted out in next pay review.

What I did not do was throw a wobbly and refused to go into work the next day and generally sulk about the place and complain 'my head was not in the right place'.  That's the difference.

Spoke with somebody at Watford FC yesterday, said FF would be a top 4-5 Premier League player if he could sort his head out, however the chances of that it would seem, on evidence, are extremely slim. One can only hope before he passes his prime he will see the errors of his ways and take responsibility for the decisions/choices he makes in his life and the consequences that come with this. If he does, as said, we’ll have an even better player on our hands.

He 'loves the club' so much he refused to play as wanted more money despite being already on £25k pw on a contract he was happy to sign less then a year earlier.

If I recall, Henrik Larson had a rolling contract at Celtic which meant he would always be on £5k more than the highest earner. Nothing wrong with FF or any top player valuing themselves, but the way that FF went about it was miaguided. That said, I continue to make mistakes in my life but there has to come a time when FF has to start learn from his, if he wants to move to the next level.
