Yes. The inside forwards were where I had the problem.  Colin Dobson, Bobby Craig, Billy Griffin, Pancho Pearson.

Got a feeling Dobson often played on the wing?

The Germany 5-0 wasn't a rubbish game.  I was there.  Also saw Germany beat Uruguay 4-0 at Hillsboro.  And went to the other two WC matches at Hillsboro.

W.Germany were easily the best side in the tournament.  They would have won it, I think, but for a wee wee tail-eyed Azerbaijani linesman.

The fans were brilliant.  Especially the Argentinians.  I stood with them in the rain on the Kop.  They were bouncing 40 years before us.

Maybe football then wasn't quite up to todays exacting standards but so what?  Watching that was better than playing with my yo-yo or sister's Hula Hoop.   Some of you lot don't know how lucky you are, with your fancy dan computers and mobile phones.  Not quite the same spending a night with a slide rule.

Dobson played on the wing when I 1st went and then got moved to inside right when craig left .....wiilkinson got injured and holliday came in for him on the left .I know I saw pearson but cant recall much about him unlike holliday who was borderline useless ........I don't think I saw griffin but when you look at his record for us its amazing that they sold him to bury .........always think the1st years supporting the club as a child are the best , the players were hero's .

I'll tell you who was rubbish - that Pele bloke. All of his most famous moments were cockups.

That header against Gordon Banks when it was easier to score - MISSED

Shooting from the halfway line thinking he's it - MISSED

Dummying the keeper to get himself an open goal - MISSED

And now he's most famous for not being actually able to get a cockup.  Pele was RUBBISH.

Love it, reads even better if you imagine Alan Partridge saying it as though he actually believes it!

Now now OP. Either you're being intentionally provocative or you weren't at that match and the others at Hillsbro in 66. I was and the West Germany/Swiss match still brings back happy memories of a full blooded open exciting match, far more so than the pass it back, sideways, back again - repeat ad nauseam that most  of the current bloated world cups produce.

Very true.

I forgot to give a mention to Keith Ellis who I remember getting stick when I was a nipper. That hat trick against Man U at Old Trafford shut them up for a bit.

Great days. No squad rotation. Same names week in week out, win or lose. I don't care what anyone says, there's some legendary names amongst that lot.

keith ellis is a good call ...52 goals in a 100 games and your right the fans got on his back ...he'd be worth about 80 million with that record today and I think we sold to him Scunthorpe for about 10 grand ...though his replacement wernt bad

Weird OP. For starters he isn't old enough to have directly witnessed any football from the 60's which makes any judgement from him worthless.

Speaking from my own point of view as someone who started going in '67 (but who also watched the '66 Cup Final and the entire World Cup on telly as a 7 year old) it was about the magic of the game, the magic of being there, the excitement, the atmosphere.

I suspect that none of us old enough to have experienced it gave a stuff about the technical ability, it was about the entertainment value and there was plenty of that around. In fact I'd gladly turn the clock back 50 years and go through it all again, even the 70's when from a football point of view we really were crap!

Give me 40K+ crowds on a regular basis and the occasional glory moment or season against the over commercialised spectacle we have now any day of the week, and especially the camaraderie of the fans!

I went Crazy when Pak do Wick (whatever) put South Korea 3-0 up against Portugal at Goodison Park and the game had been ignored for live coverage !

The Sundays had diagrams of how Dobson held up play for so long with three neat little overhead kicks before delivering the perfect ball for Laynes diving header.

One of the best I have ever seen.
