Van Aken

I do not think he looked overall as good as anything in this division...he looked good with the ball but made defensive mistakes in both games!!!

So no...he did not look as good as anything in this division. People on here are just blinded by by blonde flowing looks flying about in the wind and he looks sexy as anything pulling some great tekkers out the bag with a 60 yard pass. Embarrassing and incredibly simplistic view on the game.

Where's the blond flowing locks you are obsessed with?

Van aken has only one issue, I would describe best as 'footwork'. Defending is an art of knowing when to drive forward and when to move  back. Judging crosses, tackling, catching your opponent offside and winning balls in the air all depend on getting your body weight moving with momentum in the right direction. Those who mis judge look flat footed, weak in the air and out of position. Van aken hasn't got it sorted yet , possibly due to more balls coming in through the air and a faster pace than Dutch league.

But it isn't that hard to get a good player sorted, and as I have said before, loovens is unbelievably good at this, hence why he wins so much despite not being that big. Van aken will be terrific player once that instinctive first move is sorted and he can use his body weight and height better as a result.

Once Loovens gets him on the good stuff.. he'll see the game in the shame way.

Shocking defensively yesterday to be honest

How many times.

He has played half a dozen games in one of the hardest leagues in the world ,and has shown more than enough to see he looks like being the real deal . He will obviously make a few mistakes till he gets up to speed with english football.

This lad looks quality. Give him a break

I can't believe the OP has written our new defender off after 5 games.

You couldn't make it up.

Someone did :-)

You've completely missed the point. I haven't done that at all. I've simply stated that based on what I've seen, he would make a good holding midfielder as he looks to be a proper footballer...his weakness thus far has been defending. I don't rate Jones or Hutch (as a midfielder) so I would have Joost in there instead.

Guy is shocking...said it about Reach, said it about Jones, said it about Abdi...in about 4 weeks there will be threads on here slating Van Aken...I can almost guarantee e it. If by Jan Owlstalk hasnt turned on Van Aken I'll give a hundred pounds to charity.

You're the troll that targets players on almost a weekly basis...the Scapegoat of the Match trophy you donated shows this...tell me again when CC will be sacked and put the 100 quid on that lol

He needs to be eased into the first team frame but due to the injury to Loovens he's been thrown in at the deep end.

He's looked a little shakey on a few occasions and I don't think he's ready to be playing every match but he is only very young and he's never played in England before so a very steep learning curve for him.

When Loovens is fit he'll hopefully come in alongside Lee's and then Van Aken can have a gradual impact on the first team as I'm sure was the initial intention.

He's definitely one for the future though and way too early to right him off.

From what I've seen ( admittedly not much) his problems seem to stem from only being able to tackle/ block with his left foot. His distribution on the left foot is excellent, but a canny striker is always going to take him on down his right side. He hasn't learnt to get his body in the right position to steer the attacker away from goal to an area where it's safer to put the tackle in. This happened early on against Leeds when that blonde lad broke from halfway and turned him inside out before crossing to the far post where the bloke headed it into the side netting. Was it against Yoonited when he missed a left footed tackle as the attacker went to his right on the edge of the penalty area, could have been some other opposites, not sure. Anyway, he will be a cracking player if/when he sorts out the pace of the game at Championship level. Maybe if he played alongside Loovens he'd learn more than from Lees, such a good role model Loovens, never panics, always cool, calm and collected. And of course they'd be speaking" Double Dutch" :duntmatter:

he's dropped a few clangers in his short time here to be fair, the air kick yesterday was comical as the ball wasn't even travelling fast

i think it's down to nerves and adjusting to a new physical division, he's very lightweight but has shown strong glimpses, incredibly early to write him off

Although it's nice to see him comfortable on the ball playing lovely passes. He needs to be judged on defending (Wednesday fans don't do that). He could have done better against Forest, woefull against Blades and had a few blips yesterday. But, he's young and will get better once he's adjusted to English football. I still think he'd make a better midfielder. We look better going forward with him, but not defensively. Had a cracker against CCFC. Needs to replicate it

Fibonacci,

He's relatively young. And thrown straight in at deep end.

Give him a bit more time, also Loovens guidance on and off pitch, plus our new defensive coach's help and he'll really progress.

Don't forget, we only team without a specialist defensive midfielder in front of 2 cente halves.

Also, I've seen Dutch football and its all technical so this is very different.

People said Stones and Mawson had dodgy games and they are now £40 million players.

I think he certainly has potential and will be a big player for us over the coming years. Would guess Loovens will come back in to the team and replace him against Bolton. However it would be nice to see Venancio involved in the match day squad in the near future. Reports on him where encouraging before he signed and with him being his previous clubs captain his leadership skills could come in handy.
