Popular Post dunsbyowl
Ron sadly died on this day in 2015. I found this lovely article in an old football book from the 1960s which I thought I'd post as a tribute. It's a smashing read and gives a some background I'd never heard about Ron before as well as some decent photos - and he didn't start playing footbal until he was 13 ! Hope you enjoy the read, from a time when football wan't all about money 1 RIP Ron Springett Wednesday Legend. 5

cognacbarnowl
I played against Ron in a staff v guests match at the Riviera Lido holiday camp in Bognor Regis way back in the day. It was just a bit of fun and part of the entertainment for the guests. We told 'em that Ron wasn't allowed to play in goal as we'd have no chance of scoring, and being the utter gentleman that he was he agreed and played centre forward instead. He then went on to give us a pure footballing lesson and must have scored a dozen times, . R.I.P. you Wednesday Legend.

Cambs Owl
A real Wednesday legend. I will 'most likely go into ‘the painting and decorating business’ when I retire - says something about the times.
debram
Great read, can you imagine a footballer of his class in todays climate having to go on and earn a living painting and decorating or the likes of, his class were true professionals proud to play for club and country without great rewards, proper men.

Ronnie Starling
Talk to my dad about footballers and he barely gives any praise. Talk to him about Ron and he was the best thing since sliced bread.

dumboldowl
"the time when the long high punt is useful is when your own forwards have the advantage in height over the opposing defence" Words of wisdom from one of the finest, but we continually choose to ignore them.
