SWFC Loan Watch Returns! (part one)

Recommended Posts

Accrington  1-2  Grimsby       (att: 1,288)

First defeat in three games for Jordan Thorniley who was replaced after about an hour

Assuming this was a tactical switch, with Accy chasing an equalizer, rather than injury or anything

Luton  2-0  Port Vale      (att: 7,046)

Jack Stobbs back on the bench for this one, and brought on (73mins) with his side already trailing 2-0

Get the feeling Port Vale isn't such a happy camp right now - just hope Jack gets a break (and a decent run in the team)

gills are sh*te this year, scallys given up totally with putting any cash into the club, and he wasn't exactly free spending to start with

The beauty of these loan threads (well, for me at least) is getting to follow the fortunes of clubs I wouldn't normally give a monkeys about

Naturally, we want to see our players shine - first and foremost - but there are other considerations too

For instance, we don't know the terms of these loans but I do believe the coach/manager should be entitled to select his side from all the players available - rather than be 'required' to find a place for another side's up-and-coming youngster

That said, Clare and Thorniley both seem to have the chance to stake a claim between now and January - not so sure about Stobbs though (yet)

Port Vale are home to Forest Green on Saturday, the side directly above them at the foot of the table, to say it's a must-win is an understatement IMO

Anything less might even cost Michael Brown his job

So does he throw in a relatively untried youngster, or choose someone with more experience?

Jack's there for the whole season but unless Vale's fortunes improve, short spells off the bench might be the best he can hope for

See I used to go watch gills every week about ten years ago coz I lived like 5 minutes away from Priestfield, and my lads mam and grandad supported them so I always keep a track of them, so Clare going there intrigued me. Port Vale are a train wreck of a club and I said that when Stobbs signed on loan.  Accrington, decent club, especially for youth players so Thorniley should do well down there

Just watching the highlights on 5.

Clare looked good.

Very much involved in the build up to the goal, and I think it was Clare taking a free kick that lead to a goal that was disallowed.

Not the most comprehensive highlights, but good to see him feature so heavily.

I know a fair few Gills fans from living down there for 9 years and every one of them rates him highly, which is good to hear.

Gillingham  1-0  Charlton       (att:  7,216)

No better place to start really

Gill's first win of the season and their first league win over their local rivals since God was a lad - or 88yrs to be precise

The 3pts also lifted them out of the relegation zone and seems to have given everyone down there a welcome boost

Sean Clare made his first home start and, as mentioned above, featured heavily in most of the good bits ...

Having a hand in the goal, seeing a well struck free kick touched onto the bar, and generally making friends and influencing people

... the only one to find plenty to moan about was Karl Robinson, and that's just fine by me

Chesterfield  1-2  Accrington        (att:  4,487)

Jordan Thorniley's 4th start for Accy saw them return to winning ways, but ...

He was subbed off for the second game running (67mins) with the game poised at 0-0 and the home side down to 10 men

According to Player Ratings on 'The Football Lab' he endured a "tough first hour, struggling to handle (Bradley) Barry. Taken off in the later stages - 3"

3 ??  THREE ?!!

The same 'reporter' also had Barry down as the best player on the park. He happened to get himself sent off on 63mins, so when Jordan was replaced a few minutes later - with the score at 0-0 remember - perhaps his manager thought it was more a case of 'job done'

(Three - tut! Must've been a Chezzie fan)

Bristol City  4-1  Derby           (att:  19,473)

Sam Winnall makes his 2nd Derby appearance off the bench (59mins) with his side trailing 2-1

Things clearly got worse - VERY worse if you believe the reaction from Derby's fans, coach etc

But according to the Derby Telegraph Sam "looked lively and eager when he came on. Time For a start - 6"

That's our Sam, lively and eager

Jack Stobbs failed to make Port Vale's matchday squad once again

Their 1-1 draw at home to Forest Green leaves them bottom of League2 and without a manager

I don't know if this is good for Jack, or not

Michael Brown brought him in on loan, but rarely chose to play him

Perhaps the new coach will give him a second chance to impress - sure hope so

Joe Wildsmith is going nowhere he is our No.2 goalkeeper

Would have rather signed an old warhorse as backup and let the young guns go get 40+ games worth of experience somewhere, but with an option to bring joe back if Westwood got a lengthy lay off as they'd both be better equipped to deal with first team pressures  if needed and hopefully kick on a bit while out. You don't improve sat on your backside watching.

Is that the same Micheal Brown the horrid,  vile, little poison dwarf that warnock used to drag around from club to club with him as his "ANTI football" specialist.??

Not only is he that same horrid, vile little poison dwarf - but he's also unemployed

... at least until Colin adds him and 'Elbows' to Cardiff's coaching staff

Abbreviated somewhat this weekend ...

Derby  1-1  Birmingham            (att: 27,392)

Sam Winnall gets off the mark!

Coming off the bench after 66mins and grabbing Derby's equalizer (close range header) within a minute - sounds like he had another lively and eager last 20mins too

Rochdale  3-0  Gillingham           (att: 2,793)

Probably too early in the season to call this a relegation 6-pointer, although the result does leave Gillingham 2pts and two places off the bottom of League1

Rochdale were below them in the table before kick off but the scoreline seems a fair reflection of their dominance

Sean Clare played the whole game but his side were 2-0 down midway through the first half and forced to play all second half with ten men

Rochdale's third goal didn't arrive until the closing stages but they'd also missed a penalty before then

Meanwhile, down in League2 ...

Neither Jack Stobbs nor Jordan Thorniley featured today

Jack, apparently, is one of seven loanees on Port Vale's books - so two of 'em are always bound to miss out - their 1-1 draw at Yeovil moves them out the drop zone

Whereas Accrington's 1-1 draw at home to Cheltenham sees them drop out of the top three

No idea why Jordan missed out - except he played no part in their midweek 3-2 Trophy win over Middlesbro U23s either - so could be a connection there

A welcome distraction, or a total irrelevance - take your pick

Brentford  1-1  Derby             (att:  8,679)

Sam Winnall's first start and he almost helped his side pull off highway robbery of wee pipe Turpin proportions

BBC stats are heavily in Brentford's favour ... possession  76  -  24%

                                                                        shots  14  -  3

                                                                        corners  11  -  0

But when Sam got subbed on 69mins his assist meant Derby were 1-0 up, he also picked up a booking - a late equalizer saw justice prevail (sort of)

Gillingham  0-0  Scunthorpe          (att; 4,002)

Sean Clare starts again but gets replaced at half time

The result leaves Gillingham third bottom, but Scunny are doing okay so perhaps it's more like a point gained

Port Vale  1-2  Accrington          (att: 3,360)

I had this one billed as Stobbs v Thorniley, except Jack was nowhere to be seen - again

However, Jordan's return coincided with Accy's return to winning ways and sees them moved back into the top 3

Port Vale are struggling though - no manager, 3rd bottom (on GD) - surprising then that our title-winning U23 skipper can't get any game time

Edit ......... really?  Wee Pipe Turpin?  Really?

THAT is truly PATHETIC

Cardiff  0-0  Derby         (att: 18,480)

I'm getting the impression Derby don't do thrillers

Instead, they followed their MR Turpin-esque point grab at Brentford with yet another non-event at Cardiff

Imagine the scene: Rowett on horseback (complete with tricorn hat & black mask) pointing a flintlock pistol into the back of an old carriage where Colin (naturally dressed in drag, enormous wig, powdered face, painted eyebrows etc) sits squirming whilst complaining bitterly

Anyroad, Sam Winnall started his second game for them but was replaced at half time

Blackburn  1-0  Gillingham      (att: 10,844)

Slipped my attention last week that Gillingham's boss 'agreed to step down' - I'm guessing as a result of their poor start

Either way, Sean Clare kept his place under caretaker Peter Taylor's second match in charge

However, he picked up a first half booking and was subbed off after 70mins

The defeat leaves his side second bottom of League1

Forest Green  0-1  Accrington         (att: 2,594)

Jordan Thorniley, on the other hand, can't stop winning

Or rather Accrington seem to whenever he's in the side

He also picked up a booking but this latest victory keeps his side in 3rd place and closes the gap on leaders Notts Co to 2pts

Again, no sign of Jack Stobbs (no mention of an injury either - none that I can find)

But Port Vale managed to lose again without him (2-0 at Stevenage) but stay out of the drop zone thanks to Accy's result and the fact Chesterfield can't stop losing either

Brilliant .

I did genuinely imagine that scene.

Excellently painted, Ethel!

International break and all that, so it's the Check-it-out Trophy that gets star billing this time around ...

Jordan Thorniley is edging it right now as our most successful loanee (wins to apps ratio) but I assume he was rested last night

He didn't play a part in the last round either, so perhaps manager John Coleman likes to rotate

Either way, Accrington lost 2-1 at home to Blackpool so I'd expect Jordan will regain his place for their next league match on Sat'dy

Colchester  0-1  Gillingham           (att: 684)

Sean Clare is edging it regarding appearances though, and he started again last night

The 'Gills' reports I read suggested a poor game but Sean received several mentions for his strong attacking play

However, he was subbed off after 73mins and so missed the glory of his side's last-minute winner

Port Vale  1-0  Newcastle U21          (att: 824)

Desperate for Jack Stobbs to see some action in this one, and his chance finally came as he was given the last 10mins or so as a late sub

Better than nowt, I suppose

He'd hardly call it the opportunity to impress but it seems likely his side will have a new manager before the weekend (Neil Aspin?) so he might consider his loan spell there is effectively about to start

Attendance note: clearly the competition struggles to attract the crowds in the early stages but credit due to the 105 Newcastle fans who travelled over to the Potteries (midweek) to watch their U21s - or maybe they're just sick of the international break an' all

On a side note:

Lewis McGugan played the first 70mins for Northampton last night in their Chickenfeed Trophy match at Peterborough

Can't help but think his career would be in a far healthier position right now had he not refused the chance of a loan out at the start of last season

you read this and see how the young lads find it hard to cement a place in the lower leagues and it makes you realise that carlos is probably right not to have them in the squad ......it's a massive step up from dev games even to leagues 1 & 2 .
