That was a second division game.

can you remember the game a couple of years later when the club wouldn't sell us tickets and people had to travel down to derby during the week to buy them ....if you do, any idea why Wednesday wouldn't sell them .

Due to Oldham.....I went down and bought also....and got chased around Derby after the game, one lad jumped over a wall by the river to escape, no idea if he ended up in it.

Southend by ICO...bricks and skinheads...

Great away days back then...true invasions.....but there's definitely benefits to today's more sedate events, far less stress for old farts.

I went to an away match at Southend away on a Tuesday night! It was called off when we got there. Big Jack came out to comiserate and to tell us not to cause trouble on the way back.

Anyone there?

i went with the Darnall Owls from the Staniforth Arms, it was freezing and no heating on the coach  so cold the windows were iced over.

my favourite was probably the 1st game in the 3rd at southend ....was working at butlins in skeggy and went on the train which wasn't an easy journey ,arrived and asked some old fella which way to the ground and followed his directions only to get down to where he sent me to find they hadn't played there since 1955 .no matter found roots hall and a riotious day  will be remembered by the 1000s that were there......bonus on the trip home was being on the same train as the Newcastle team on there way back from west ham and having a few words with the bloke in my avatar telling him how the lads had played ................for those that wernt there we lost and things didn't get any better coz we didn't win one away game all season

Confused now - I thought you were Bernie Winters

Didn't make it there thank God. Was already in London on a national express when Gillingham away was cancelled on new years day 1978 I think

I was on the supporters club coach to the same game and found out when we were in london the game was off, we ended up stopping off at Coventry to watch them play Middlesboro - but on the boro end...which was an interresting situation!!!

I don't remember that. I went to Derby 3 or 4 times in the early 80's and only remember the problem when we were banned. Just turned up on the day and paid on the gate though.

Gate getting kicked down...at Chesterfield from memory.

Yeah that was some night, stood outside well after kick off in a massive queue, all of a sudden we started moving like a tide, no chance of not following the crowd, suddenly we were inside the ground.  A little cramped though.  Don't remember much of the game to be honest apart from it being rubbish.

"nobody told me there would be days like these!"

Remember going to Bury in about 1977 and swapping ends at half time.

Yes I remember that too. Went on the train and got escorted from Victoria? to Picadilly by Chief Constable Andersons mad police army.

Unbelievable Jeff

Think it was in the middle of the Arsenal cup games too.

I think this was the game where Robert Maxwell tried to cash in on our big followings by increasing ticket prices to £4 when average price was about £1.50.

Wednesday fans boycotted it. Me included.

i went to derby as well ....also went a couple of years later when for some reason that escapes me  we didn't sell any tickets .

Think I remember that game, didn't we get the lower tier behind the goal? Got pi55ed on and both sets of fans got let out at the same time after game, got hit in the face by a load of coins derby fans were throwing and got trod on by a police horse, bit 5hitty when that's my only memory of the match

I remember losing a lot at old rubbish grounds, but what I remember mostly is  always being cold and wet.

From standing on uncovered terraces rain lashing down, the cold wind blowing and snow falling.

Oh happy days.

And playing on pitches that were ankle deep in mud.

The games we were banned for Oldham were Swansea, Grimsby, Derby and Bristol Rovers.  Went to everyone.

By hook or by crook so did I. At Swansea we were on the home terrace which was down the side. Everything was good till we scored then it was obvious who we were and all hell broke loose. Eventually got escorted round to the empty away end. There were loads at Bristol, Derby and Grimsby. Derby fans gave it the "Big Un" as for once they outnumbered us about 20 to 1.
