Rhodes "didn't want to take a penalty"

Paying more money doesn't automatically make a footballer more confident that he's going to score a penalty. It's not about 'going missing'.

JR: "Boss, I'm really not confident about this"

CC: "I'll speak to Dejphon about upping your wages"

JR: "Just gimme the ball. I'll take all five kicks if I have to".

I agree that no matter how much money you earn you will still feel pressure.

But if you are happy to sign a contract on £50k per week you should accept being put in pressure situation is something you are expected to deal with which he obviously didn't.

Anyway we are going round in circles and will have to agree to disagree.

oh ffs are we still on about this ,if you take them you take them if you don't you don't  no mystery no bottling no nothing it was his choice , and for those who have played as a striker , scoring from open play and scoring from a pen is at different ends of the scale . as a striker it's mostely on instinct when you score , if it's a pen you have time to think , and often that causes you to miss it's a different ball game altogether , but no matter it's easier to castigate a player and say i would do this that and the other , well until you are in that cauldron  on the pitch with thirty odd thousand watching you you will never know the feeling ,you will never know the pressure on the player  , we missed two pens  we could have scored another in open play ie Fletchers golden chance , why are these not castigated they contributed to us losing , but hey lets have a crack at  Rohdes cause he didn' offer to take a pen ,sigh

Is that why he has scored about 15 pens in his career

Are we going to keep this farcical thread going, or start getting behind a player we have wanted for years?

A good season from Jordan will give us a huge chance of promotion.

Bit early to be on his back.

I'm sure the psychologists would have something to say about "anger transference" or summat in relation to this thread.

No no one who has played footy at any level can explain how chunky chuffs like Kevin Pressman could take a better penalty than Chris Waddle.

My own theory is that it's summat to do with having less distraction going on in your head. I have no doubt that despite his talent Rhodes was affected by

a) His miss against Leeds

b) He cares about us more than most

c) Maybe weird stuff with having played for Udders

d) His dad in the dugout and family in the stands.

As a fan, never mind if I was captain or manager - I wouldn't  want somebody with their head full of that poo taking a penalty. What I don't get is how vicious "supporters" are towards players who clearly care about the club. I can only think it is a way of redirecting anger and frustration. We were close to getting promotion and it went from joy (westys save) to despair (Fessi s being saved) in less than  minute. It must be someone's fault. Ah yes - Him!!!

PS Thank God Dave didn't take one and miss ....

Not read any of the 22 pages, but if the lad didn't feel confident after his miss at Leeds and not really been banging them in due to the complete lack of service down to the negative tactics then I don't think he REFUSED he just didn't feel confident.

You don't turn from a goal machine into a bobbar player over night.

Hopefully with a proper pre season, Carlos will play to his strengths i.e. get the ball in the flipping box and we will see the best of JR.

roger the haters.

I would agree with Carlos that you can't force him to take one and if he knows he isn't confident he is right to say no. Why he isn't confident to take one is the bigger issue that should be discussed, he obviously hasn't been a success so far, does the teams negative tactics play a part in that?

I agree with all the posts that dont blame JR for opting out of taking a penalty for all the reasons given. Confidence at a penalty shoot out is probably the biggest deciding factor as to who takes them.

Hutch was obviously confident as that just Hutch. He missed but he hasnt been castigated. He is our talisman of that I would guess is 100% from our fans.

Fessi missed and gets abuse cos thats what Fessi gets. Hes our Marmite man. Love him or hate him.

If JR had taken a penalty and missed what would the reaction have been if he said afterwards that he didnt feel confident.

I can guess.

Here is another "GUESS".

When Udders beat the grunters on penalties.

JR did not take one of the first 5.

He took the 6th, maybe that is his lucky number/confident number call it what you will.

Why not just back him, get behind him to score in open play, which "BELIEVE IT OR NOT, SHOCK HORROR" he has been quite good at, when played correctly.

Sorry A12owl, the heading of my post is not a dig at your last line.

No prob Mal. I know what you mean. No offence taken. I am 100% for JR. I believe he will come good as when,as everybody says (even Rocketowl) he gets the right service. He is working his socks off as Fessi does and Winnall to try to get into the game but tactics just not right for him YET.

Onwards and upwards.

£290m now being quoted as THE PRIZE. Let it be us next season.
