TODAY’S OPPOSITES

Newcastle played in a number of different kits before adopting their famous black and white stripes. The origin of the colours being adopted is a legendary tale on Tyneside. Club Captain Lord Archibald Bulls-Knacker, 7th Duke of Walker was invited to a well to do fancy dress party, attended by a host of celebrities of the day, including His Majesty King Victoria. Bulls-Knacker had gone to the party as a zebra.

The following morning he awoke still blind drunk in a hedge and stumbled home to his mansion on the fashionable Scrogg Road. Bulls-Knacker had a shower and a shave and then returned his outfit to the fancy dress shop. Only he had in fact mistakenly returned the club kits (back in those days, the club captain was legally obliged to wash all the kits and have sex with the other players' wives). Realising his mistake and with a vital game just five minutes away, Bulls-Knacker had no alternative but to fashion some shirts from his Zebra outfit.

From that day forth, the club were affectionately known by their now famous nickname 'The Black and White Zebras’.

The one belief of Newcastle United supporters that keeps them breathing every day is that the great Alan Shearer will one day return to Newcastle. Nobody knows when this second coming will occur, but many believe that it will be after Kevin Keegan will has come and gone a further 7 more times, Mike Ashley will have sold the club to the local circus and the club will finish 17th 5 more times before this can happen.

Sheffield Wednesday forward Fernando Forestieri is likely to return after missing the last four games. Midfielder Sam Hutchinson (knee) is out but defender Vincent Sasso returns from a three-match ban.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez says DeAndre Yedlin and Rolando Aarons will not be risked despite progress in their recovery from injury, nor will Jack Colback and Issac Hayden. Chancel Mbemba should continue in defence following his midweek return.

The Magpies lost the corresponding game to Sheffield Wednesday on Boxing Day, losing 1-0 at St James' Park to a Glenn Loovens header.

    ▪    The Owls have won their last two games against Newcastle, keeping a clean sheet on both occasions; they last won three on the spin in September 1957.

    ▪    The Magpies have lost only once in their last 11 trips to face Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough (W5 D5).

    ▪    Steven Fletcher has scored in three of his last five home league appearances against Newcastle.

    ▪    Newcastle are on the longest unbeaten away run in the Championship currently (W4 D3), but have failed to score in their last two on the road.

    ▪    The Magpies have collected 43 points in away games this season, at least 10 more than any other side has managed.

    ▪    After a run of five successive clean sheets at home, the Owls have gone their last five without keeping one.

KING CARLOS’ PEARLS OF WISDOM

“We don’t look to the last time we played Newcastle, we win confidence from the last game we played on Tuesday. The confidence to the players comes when you win, when the team wins, this is the best. We needed the victory in the last game and the signals we gave were important to us. When we win and play more near our football in parts of the game, that gives confidence and our challenge tomorrow is to upgrade the quality again. Of course, the Magpies – who are in the hunt to win the league title – represent a huge challenge.

Before the season, everybody agreed that Newcastle are the number one candidate for promotion. When you reach this stage of the season and they are top, they are the best in the division, not just in theory but in practice. When you play the team that is first in the table, it’s the most difficult game of the season for sure. It’s a big challenge to us, we respect them a lot, they have plenty of quality, quality individuals, a collective quality with a good manager. But we are Sheffield Wednesday, we play in Hillsborough and we will be ready to the game, understanding that we are playing against the strongest side of the competition. To be near and near our best level is what we need that to achieve the points.”

Great OMDT like always Pauli!

Hard game tonight, even harder to predict we've got it in us to beat Newcastle as was shown up at sportdirectjumbomug stadium on Boxing Day but they will be up for it for the very same reason!

I want the win but it wouldn't be the end of the world if we drew especially with a team gunning for top spot.

my prediction...

head 1-1

heart a good old revenge 8-0 win for the Wednesday!

Wicked Pauli. Last game at stupid o'clock and twitter before home

and  the march to Wembley. Saw a piggy fan in hotel. He was obviously ashamed to wear any pig shirt. After pleasantries felt it only right to remind him that it was the anniversary of wembley 1993. Conversation ended quickly. ...

Brain (too much sun) says 1-1

King Carlos says we are here to win. Good enough for me.

1-0 Wallace in first half before being subbed or in 2nd half after coming on as a sub.

I say again....JUST DO IT
