TODAY’S OPPOSITES

“Lecky's bin cut, an' t' wattah's braan…” - Billy Casper, mayor of Barnsley.

Barnsley is the best place in Yorkshire, but only if you have never been to anywhere else in Yorkshire. Barnsley is full of glamorous sights and places such as Stairfoot Rarndabart, Tarn Hall, and Peel Square. Also known more affectionately as Dingleville, it is populated by folk who seem to all have similar last names and the same physical characteristics. During a storm in 1846, a tree fell over. They still talk about it in the local pubs.

Barnsley folk used to keep coal in the bath, but now that there's no coal anymore, the bath is where the various odd rolls of wallpaper that get left over from decorating are kept. Another common feature in Barnsley homes is wire mesh surrounding the dining table, usually attached to the legs by six-inch nails. Hens, banties and and sometimes prize cockerels are kept within this enclosure. A hole in the table top facilitates any crumbs and leftovers to be scooped directly into the pit. Where livestock is not a priority, meals are eaten off trays whilst sat in front of telly.

Whilst out and about in Tarn, be careful not to take anyone up on their offer to give you a 'Barnsley Kiss’, it is quite unpleasant and hurts a lot. Should you find yourself in a prickly situation, you will in all probability be asked if your mother has a sewing machine, so that you can 'get that stitched then’.

Barnsley also have a football team which is how we come to be playing them today!

MATCHDAY THINGS

Official Matchday Pie: Tyke and Mushroom.

Official Matchday Drink: First Sixteen Pint Challenge of April. Get in!

Official Matchday Song: “Just Kissed My Baby” by The Meters…

Barnsley's Get Thin Jones (fatness) is a doubt and fellow full-back Callum Elderberry (chunky thighs) is definitely out. The Tykes are winless in six games and have not won at t'Stairfoot since beating Leeds 3-2 on 21 January.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal may make changes after losing 2-0 to Reading last time out. Defender Tom Lees returned after six weeks out in that fixture and should retain his place, while midfielder Sam Hutchinson is likely to come back in.

    ▪    Barnsley are winless in seven league matches against the Owls, losing five and drawing two since a 1-0 win at Hillsborough in February 2009.

    ▪    Sheffield Wednesday have only lost one of their last eight league games at Oakwell (W3 D4), a 2-1 defeat in October 2008.

    ▪    The Tykes have the youngest average starting line-up in the Championship this season (24 years, 27 days).

    ▪    The Owls have won just one of their last six Championship games (D1 L4). Indeed, only opponents Barnsley (2) and Rotherham (0) have won fewer points in the last six fixtures.

    ▪    Barnsley have scored more goals via substitutes than any other Championship side this season (10).

    ▪    The Tykes have also scored a league-high five goals on counter-attacks.

KING CARLOS’ PEARLS OF WISDOM

“In a derby, in all the world, you don’t have favourites. This is what makes a derby. It will be an interesting game between two teams who want to win for sure. We’ll do our part of the job, we have had two weeks to work and know exactly what we must do to try to achieve points. Let’s see tomorrow in the game. We have training today, we have players that, even today, we don’t know if they will be available. We have training and after we will make our decisions. But the panorama is better now than it was before. In this moment, Tom Lees is training more, we have players that are more ready to the game. We will be ready to the derby at t'Stairfoot Rarndabart. In this moment I must give confidence to the players we have, we have players to do a good game and discuss the three points. They are all 100% focused on this important game.

I must tell you the level of training has been fantastic, especially this week. Very high level, very high tempo, I felt the high energy levels of my team and this can be a good signal to the end part of the season. We are positive and our players are positive to the game and this is the most important. Tomorrow we will be with a good support from our fans, this will be important. They still believe in us and we will try on the pitch to give them happiness in the game. It’s why we are working hard. Barry has come back very strong this week. He was involved in the national team but just played in the first game last week. He didn’t play this week and has come back very strong. He’s come back the real Barry Bannan again. He has given us very good signals this week. We need him with full energy to this part of the season. You know in football the midfield is very important because it is the brain of the team. It’s the midfield that can put the rhythm more high or more down. It’s very positive for us that Barry Bannan has come back with full energy, very positive and we hope that he can play on Saturday with the same levels he has trained this week. A very high standard to be sure”

Brilliant as ever. Liked the "does your mother have a sewing machine..."

Just waking up in Penang temperature 26° rising to 30° hot and sweaty.

We are 7 hour ahead so 7.30 pm brilliant twitter feeds are called for.

Head says a sneaky 1-0 with Winall to score. Heart imagines team queueing up to take free kicks from Worsborough first half, Elsecar second half.

Hoping to find a tv for Toy town game on tuesday which sadly will be at stupid o'clock.

JUST DO IT. PRETTY NOT NECESSARY. JUST DO IT.
