The strange argument for f.ookin' the Prem off

The problem is that everybody is enjoying us compete at the top of the division because of the dream of going up.

If you knew we were never going up, what would be the point?

If you get into the PL, you get better players and you still have the dream of winning a cup or getting into Europe.

Even if you get relegated you get a better chance of enjoying watch your team get promoted again due to the Parachute payments.

Theres a shedload don't seem to be enjoying it mate

Narrowly missing out last season had the strange effect – noticeable on here, in particular – of making it seem like this year was some sort of 'last chance', when clearly that's not necessarily the case. I imagine it's because after so long languishing in mediocrity we couldn't quite believe we were (are!) up there in contention, and we still instinctively think it's going to be taken away from us at any moment. Like we're boozed up and dancing about with a traffic cone on our head in the middle of the road, and any day now some Fun Police are gonna turn up, chuck us in the van and drive us to sit on the lower-mid-table naughty step again.

There are lots of reasons why a return to the Prem would be absolutely glorious for us, but yes, the novelty would doubtless wear off after a few seasons to some extent. Unless we could start mounting an annual challenge for the top four within a decade (or, alternatively, unless we found ourselves constantly scrapping for end-of-season Prem survival), there's every reason to predict that we *could* gradually find ourselves starved of real excitement in terms of league positions year-on-year. It's arguable that being where we are now is much more exciting in its own way.

However, three things that make it a no-brainer for me:

Firstly (and mainly), the huge funding boost would run very deep at this incredibly storied and historical but somewhat tarnished old club – it could really start to put some of the old sparkle back in around the place. As a Wednesdayite who started going to games in the early '80s, for me that would be massively exciting to watch, even if we were largely stuck in the lower-middle of the top tier while it did.

Secondly, the Leicester thing. Because sod it, why not?

Thirdly, playing in the Premier League is the highest you can fly in terms of English football. So simply being up as high as you can go, making it into the mix at the highest level you can manage as a club, is something all teams absolutely have to aim for, all the time. Otherwise, what's the point of any of it, in a sense? Sure, it's also about fun and family and brotherhood and all that stuff – but that's for us, the fans. The team exists as a competitive sporting entity in and of itself, too. It needs a long-term aim, a carrot at the end of the stick, beyond just giving us somewhere to go and enjoy ourselves on a Saturday afternoon. If it didn't, it might just as well be a weekly coach trip or cinema club or whatever that we all went on together instead.

Wednesday getting up to the Prem would mean Wednesday win, in a sense. It would mean the team of '16-17 made it, they achieved something huge, they go down in SWFC history etc. In the most immediate sense, it wouldn't even really matter if we bobbed around mid-table for a few years when we got there...that's a concern for future years. Just getting there would be about a moment in time that we were all around to witness, a payoff for all these years of unwavering support through thick and thin, a coming together of everything we've scrapped for and dreamed of.

It would, ultimately, just be a thing we could all say we lived to see.

So yeah, I think they should keep on having a go for it, meself. :manager:

Great post Mr. Tom, if I could have given it +10 I would have.

I understand fully the sentiment behind the OP but If you have no aspirations, if your content with the status quo you invariably go backwards because I will put money on it there are plenty of people desperate to take your place.

For those that love to go and watch the games live as I did before moving overseas the Premier League will relieve pressure on ticket prices, that can only be good. S6 is a wonderful place to watch Premier League footy on a Saturday afternoon and yes, we deserve it.

There'd be a meltdown every week on here first season.

Tickets, stadiums, catering, players' contracts, executive boxes, tv coverage, everybody who ever criticises us ever on telly or in the papers etc etc

And then to top it all off a 356 page thread about players' values in The Sun's Fantasy Football League.

We will be having a RIP thread every day as OT's more excitable members just explode randomly.

Its Win/Win for you then mate....Don't have to ante up....doesn't have the proper perspective does it?

If I was simply having to watch them on the Telly I would totally agree with you..

They're enjoying it more than under Irvine.

Last season everybody enjoyed it.

Tgis season is bl00dy frustrating though. It just feels like we should be doing so much better. No settled team, no established method of play, can't score and giving soft goals away. It's just so bl00dy frustrating!

I can't make my mind up if we're going to plummet down the table or go on a ten match unbeaten bl00dy run. I've not much hair, but I'm tearing it out.

Have to say I agree with OP (Asteener) Not sure the Premier is all it's cracked up to be. This week I've written via snail mail to Joe Palmer explaining what it's like to be a long distance Wednesdayite, with little prospect of affording pay on the gate prices on our occasional visits to relatives in Killamarsh. There are so many like me all over the country who would have to calculate the cost of fuel etc to get to matches only to be confronted with a pricey ticket at the end of a marathon journey. I just think the ticket prices now are outrageous and I can't see them being frozen or going down in future, Premier or not. Time was I would have gone to matches when I was up there but I couldn't afford to do it now, last time I went was Arsenal game cos it was half term and I was visiting the rels but that was £80 for two adults and a kid for a fiver. Not doable very often on a pension, Joe Palmer doesn't seem to realise people haven't had a decent pay rise for years to be able to afford any price rises he may want to impose.

Rant over.

Great OP. Don't agree with everything, but really good thought-provocation.

Prem anyday. Up against the best players, managers and fans. Fuller house. MOTD

every week. All over the national media. Attracting and affording quality players.

I remember going up in 84 and more than holding our own. No reason we can't do it again.

I am am loving the last season and a half, but for every Villa there's a Burton, and for every Newcastle there's a Wigan.

I went to my first game in 2000 and I've no memory of us being in the Prem.

To me to make it there would feel like Del Boy finally becoming a millionaire. To see us on Match of the Day would be both amazing and surreal. The Europa League would be beyond that.

Guest why the fuss?

you don't always get what you want and be careful what you wish for

bottom line it is out of our hands but if you compete in a competition its logical you want to succeed, and that meets aiming to be the best in the world

will we ever be....who knows?

should we bother trying...of course!

Blackpool

Truly feel for their fans.  They gave a noble go of it, attacking football, no stonewalling tedium.

Relegated, had that playoff final with West Ham and the master of the stonewall, then just fell off the living face of the earth amidst fan-owner acrimony and notoriously tight pursestrings.

I'm just looking forward to Jordan Rhodes smashing goals in to take us up

lol

Can't see him doing much unless we bring someone in like Ben10 to supply him

What's Owen Morrison doing these days?

Just a bloke, who used up all his luck in one go when he met his wife.

it is an emotional subject but my view is chase that dream, get back to where we were when i was a kid

Back in the big time and back as a big club

Yes it'll be costly and we as fans will have to chose carefully which games unless financial constraints dont affect you

But I want to be back up there cos nowt pieces me off more than these young pundits saying well yes, shefield wednesday

a big club who shouldn't be in the championship or they were unlucky to go on a slippery slope just as Prem League kicked on

IT STILL HURTS

so go for it but I do acknowledge OP's original argument/debate

Being just months old when we dropped out of the prem, growing up watching Jeffers and co, it had felt like a fantasy to be so close to witnessing us in the prem, and ive never felt anything worse than losing at Wembley because it meant so much.

Having never seen a decent Wednesday team before, id do pretty much anything to see Wednesday in the prem.

you oldies have seen everything already, cup wins, Europe etc, why not give us a chance eh,
