TODAY’S OPPOSITES

Reading is most famous as the home of biscuits - for it was here that the humble accompaniment to a nice sit down and a cup of tea was born. It was here that Joseph “J-Dog” Huntley, together with the master baker Emerson "Lakeand" Palmer created their empire of Victorian, crumbly goodness.

Actually, that’s a lie.

Huntley and Palmer ran the much feared biscuit mafia. Using hired thugs, they would break into small bakeries in the dead of night and steal the recipes, claiming them as their own. Hours later, their own brand product would flood the shops.

The Custard Cream became known around the world bearing the logo of the dastardly duo. Invented by Reading local, Molly Tunnock, only three people had ever had one before. Molly died some years later, alone and in poverty. A similar fate befell queen Victoria’s personal favourite, the Rich Tea and the never before heard of Chocolate Bourbon.

Huntley and Palmer’s demise was sealed in 1870 though. In a bizarre twist of fate, ruthless marauding Scotsmen burnt their factory to the ground and made off with the recipe for Hob Nobs. The future of the single most popular biscuit on the face of the earth was now in the hands of the feared McVitie clan. H & P were ruined and had to lay their workers off.

Faced with boredom and a life on the dole, the unemployed biscuit makers decided to form a football team. And that’s how we come to be playing them today!

IMPORTANT THINGS THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Venue:  Mad Jet Ski Stadium.

Kick Off: Saturday the 10th of December at 15:00

Matchday Apparel: Away shirt, massive flags. No bagpipes.

Matchday Pub: the Squire has been keeping an eye out for a decent boozer…

“Well we are in Reading and so staying pretty posh, even if not quite at the Fulham standard so why not go all JDW at The Hope Tap on one of the town centre's main thoroughfares and a gentle hop from the station. No giro-ettes or wollers here in the Royal Count-hey just a stylish red brick façade to welcome the legions into this hostelry selling not quite so out-of-date beer and well it has to be said a cracking value menu.

The landlord likes to serve his customers a decent portion and his Mrs is very proud of her burgers. Plenty of bouncing room but just remember boys that it is a 3 mile skip to the out of town Madgiclego Stadium so make sure you give yourselves plenty of time to get your 16 Pints in.

Enjoy your day and hopefully enjoy three points.”

Matchday Pie: Randy Tart.

Matchday Song: Some wild, psychedelic funk. “Chrystal Illusion” by Creations Unlimited.

MATCHDAY FACTS

Reading midfielder Joey van den Berg is expected to fit in time to face Sheffield Wednesday, while defender Liam Moore returns from suspension. But midfielder Danny Williams starts a three-match ban after his sending-off against Fulham last Saturday.

Sheffield Wednesday will be without forward Fernando Forestieri as he starts a three-match suspension following his red card against Preston. Scotland striker Steven Fletcher (ankle) could start if passed fit.

Liam Moore will return to the starting line-up against Wednesday, which is good news for Reading. The defender missed the humiliating 5-0 defeat by Fulham through suspension. Joey van den Berg is also likely to be included in the squad after the Dutchman's recovery from a knee injury, but as he comes back Danny Williams goes out to start a three-match ban.

The carrot for the Owls is that a win would see them leapfrog the Royals in the league table. Reading must defend better, they have conceded 24 goals in 19 games, more than half of the 24 in just three games.

    ▪    Reading have kept four clean sheets in their past six home league meetings with Sheffield Wednesday, winning each time they did but failing to win when they conceded (D1 L1).

    ▪    Both meetings between these sides last season ended 1-1, with the away side taking the lead both times.

    ▪    The Royals have scored the most goals in the opening 15 minutes of matches of any side in the Championship this season (6).

    ▪    Kieran Lee has made the most tackles in the Championship this season (62).

    ▪    Reading have the highest average possession in the Championship this season (60.5%).

    ▪    Sheffield Wednesday have scored exactly one goal in 11 of their last 14 away league matches.

KING CARLOS’ PEARLS OF WISDOM

Discussing Reading’s defeat at Craven Cottage last weekend, the Owls head coach said: “This gives us more credit for what we did in the Fulham game. That is the conclusion we have from this match. Because before, they won 5-0 against Huddersfield, they won 2-0 in Brentford and then 5-0 against Reading. So it gives us more credit for what we did there. We didn’t win that game because we were very unlucky but for Reading, these kind of accidents can happen to any team in the competition.

Reading are doing a fantastic season so far, they were with an accident in the game with Fulham and we believe they will try to react. They are a team that are doing very good work, play positive football, have good players and it will be hard to us. They manage the ball very well and score goals. But it will be tough to them because we are not an easy team to play against. We have a good vibe, are very positive and acting strong like a team which is the most important thing.”

Great OMDT Pauli!

im gonna stick my neck out an go with the rather sensible prediction of eleventeen - nil to the Wednesday with Westwood scoring and assisting all the goals!

seriously though with so many injuries and with fessi suspended I'd be happy with a draw... Hoping we get the win though.

That image of Tay-tay in front of custard creams in a Psychedelic soundscape is too much for me to bear.  It pushes all the right buttons and some of the wrong ones.  I feel sure it will push The Wednesday to Victory.  2- 0 to us tomorrow.  No doubt.  Thanks Pauli.
