CLUB STATEMENT: Catering being brought back in-house

Recommended Posts

There is a big opportunity here for the club to improve the overall match experience and bring some cash in. But they can't do that by just selling pies, chips, tea, coffee, beer etc. The stuff on offer has to improve drastically. Before the game they could put up a marquees in various carpark areas/outer ground pitches and sell hot meat rolls/chinese/curry meals. Create a few up market eateries. If you are going to sell pie and chips make them bloody good ones. Room for fish and chips ? Got to appeal to more supporters. Even bring in Bere's if you like and a few local traders.

Goes for a widdle when Fletcher injured.

Queue at kiosk... FFS

Three pouring half a pint of Amstel into plastic 'glasses', well one pouring and two passing the plastic glasses.

One person serving with lad just watching

Anybody else serving love?

Another lad appears and goes to other end of counter

Can you serve buddy? to lad watching.

No

Lad at beer kiosk offers to serve hot drinks

Yaaaay

Two teas please mate

'gets calculator'

'looks at price list/piece of paper'

'enters 2.30'

I said two teas please mate

starts again...

'enters 2.30, looks at price list and enters 2.30'

And a Diet Coke

starts again...

'looks at price list, enters 2.30...'

They are all £2.30 buddy...

'looks at price list, enters 2.30 and then 2.30'

'asks for £4.60'

'looks at me'

Not right mate, it is £2.30 times three which is £6.90...!

On the 5th attempt we got there...

Gave him a Tenner

'picks up calculator, enters 10.00 (not 10) and - 6.90'

'gives me £.10 and a big smile'

Knowledge is Power

The last 3 times I went to the kiosk exactly the same I'm far too honest once I got given my £20 back when I payed with a twenty. And other two times I was given too much back . I should have just laughed and walked but couldn't do it

I got the trifecta (hat-trick) on Sunday ordering a bottle of coke for £2.30 and giving a £5 note to pay:

1. Had to use a calculator to add up;

2. Gave me £1.70 change instead of £2.70;

3. Gave me Diet Coke instead of normal Coke.

Fuxake.

A few years ago, I ordered a steak pie with peas and gravy.

The guy wandered off, came back, and presented me with a Snickers. Fair enough, they both begin with "S"...

I repeated my order, off he goes again and comes back empty handed.

"We haven't got any steak pies left"

"What have you got"

"I don't know"

"Could you find out, please"

Off he goes again to find out, and returns.

"We've got Meat & Potato or Cheese & Onion"

"Meat & Potato please"

Off he goes, comes back with the pie but no peas or gravy. I remind him I wanted peas and gravy.

Off again, comes back having finally completed the onerous task of getting a pie, peas and gravy order right.

(I'll miss out the kerfuffle of the monetary transaction, as you all know what that can be like)

I collected my change, left the counter and tucked into my pie.

Which was of course, not Meat & Potato, but Steak...

We used to have an offer on, a pie, crisps an a drink for £5.50 iirc. I went down towards the end of half time and ordered one of the meal deals and gave him a £10 note. He firstly gave me £5 note as change and then went to get all the items. As he gave me all the items he goes back into the cash register and gives me another £5.50 in coins. I was dead chuffed

Don't let Andy hear you say that.

Come on Andy, ask the club if your can rent one or more outlets in the ground.

Would be a good business oppportunity to promote "Andy's award winning Pork Pies"

I like the idea of street food hawkers and having more variety.

The problem is that we don't have a lot of space to run a proper food operation, and it gets very busy at peak times.

You look at baseball grounds in the US and they're streets ahead in what they offer, but that's partly because the game goes on for hours and people take breaks all through the day.

The structure of football is just different - you have huge demand in very short periods.

So it may be that the secret is just raising the pie/burger/pint/tea service game to the next level, and I'm sure that can be done.

Be interesting to see what JP comes up with, hope his experience of working light years ahead (Shaktar in Champions League) will come into play. Maybe we'll have shorter term franchises with well known brands in the stadium.

Most modern stadiums have wifi ordering of food and drinks; pay on your phone, receipt is sent to your phone and you pick it up at half time. It gives time for staff to get it ready, more convenient for fans, online and instance data recording of sales to target future orders, etc.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, franchise licenses for different takeaway food vendors and everyone wins

Exactly...Pop-up food and drink places of high quality...it happens at ALL events. It isn't rocket science. Make people want to come early and spend money by offering quality and choice.

I used to like the Wimpy at Charlton. I don't know if it's still there. Haven't been for a few years.

Good opportunity for the club here. Basic stuff, drinks crisps etc can be handled by the club, then franchise out some spaces to specialists like Beres, Thai or Chinese, Burgers etc.
